🚐 From laggard to lead market – how does autonomous mobility succeed "The European Way"? In China, autonomous public transport is already part of everyday life; in the US, it's being scaled up at pace. Europe, by contrast, too often remains stuck in pilot mode – not for lack of expertise, but because the step into the system keeps failing to happen. In his guest article for VISION mobility, Dr. Sven Herzig, CSO & Managing Director at HOLON, sets out what matters now. His verdict: the move from pilot to regular operation is no longer primarily a question of technology.  It comes down to three levers: 🔹 Simplification – consistent, predictable rules across Europe instead of a patchwork of approval processes  🔹 Scaling – shared standards, pooled procurement, real model regions for regular operations  🔹 Sovereignty – yes to cooperation, but with control centres, decision logic and operational authority remaining in European hands The economic case is compelling: the cost per operating hour in public transport could fall from over €130 to €50–55 – an efficiency gain of around 60%. At the same time, it's an answer to the acute driver shortage and to the goal of improving availability, safety and climate targets. Autonomous mobility as public service provision – controllable, safe, European. The best way to understand autonomous mobility is to experience it. We had the pleasure of welcoming #CarstenLinnemann to the HOLON Autonomous Valley in Paderborn, where we showcased how HOLON is bringing autonomous public transportation from vision to reality. Beyond presenting our purpose-built Level 4 vehicle, we demonstrated the complete ecosystem behind it, from vehicle technology to the services required for successful deployment. The autonomous drive on our test track was the standout moment. Every ride tells the same story: skepticism quickly gives way to enthusiasm once people experience autonomous driving firsthand. That's exactly why these demonstrations matter. Autonomous driving is no longer a distant vision. It’s becoming reality both on the streets of Hamburg and even in one of the world’s most famous model cities. At the Miniatur Wunderland  in Hamburg, two HOLON autonomous shuttles are now operating in the fictional district of Knuffingen, offering visitors a glimpse of how autonomous mobility could seamlessly integrate into everyday urban life.  Just a few kilometers away, its full-scale counterpart is already being tested under real-world conditions. This is a powerful demonstration: What feels natural in miniature is quickly becoming reality at full scale. It was a pleasure to welcome Mayor Stefan-Oliver Strate and the Wirtschaftsförderung Paderborn at the HOLON Autonomous Valley in Paderborn where preparing the vehicles for use on the road through targeted training is taking place. 

Alongside interesting and forward-looking discussions about the future, a major highlight was on the agenda: a Level 4 autonomous drive on the streets of Paderborn.
 The enthusiasm of our passengers was palpable.
