Welcome to Republic City!

Founded by Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko, Republic City is the capital of the United Republic of Nations, a country separate from the Four Nations and a place in which immigrants from all cultures are welcome to live. Located on Yue Bay, the city sports a port for commerce and travel. It is one of the most technologically advanced places in the Avatar universe thanks to the combined efforts from all four nations. Because of the technological advances, this capital has some of the tallest buildings in the world, especially when compared to the one story buildings most people lived in nearly two hundred years ago. One of the main attractions of Republic City is its Pro-bending Arena, which is located roughly between Air Temple Island, the home of the spiritual Airbenders and Aang Memorial Island, an island featuring mainly a clock and a statue of Avatar Aang.

The city is separated by boroughs, one of the most famous ones being Dragon Flats Borough, a residential district and the former residence of Hiroshi Sato. While ostrich-horses used to be all the rage, people now get around via Satomobiles which, as their name suggests, were designed by Hiroshi Sato. No longer are residents forced to use lanterns; this city has electricity, powered by the electricity generated by firebenders at the power plant! Although it's still definitely cheaper to live with simple lanterns instead....

Life in Republic City

Life's not all sunshine and rainbows, but life here in the city is decent. There's not a huge separation of class like the Earth Kingdom capital Ba Sing Se. In general, if you work hard, you can live an all right life. the biggest thing to fear are usually one of the triads ransacking a business who are prone to using extortion to get what they want. But don't worry. The Republic City Police Force has your back. Usually.

Here, the culture is palpable. Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation or Water Tribe, it doesn't matter. Until recently, the Air Nation was just a fantasy, but airbenders have been cropping up all over the place recently. Everywhere you look, there's a statue or some sort of commemoration to celebrate something of the past, something or someone that helped this city.

In general, people mind their own business. They socialize with their friends, go to work, come home. Sometimes they do a bit of shopping. If it weren't for the chaos that is periodically attracted the city, life here would almost be completely normal.

Jobs

There are all sorts of jobs available in Republic City. Most people work in the buying and selling of physical goods. Fruit stands, fish stands, phonographs, automobiles and other things of that nature. Most shops are very specialized in what they sell and focus mainly on that, like selling only fish or only fruit. There are other jobs available if the life of a merchant doesn't interest someone, though. There are plenty of manual labor jobs like moving cargo around. If you're a firebender, you might be lucky enough to land a job helping to power the city. Firebenders aren't the only ones lucky enough to use their bending to help with their jobs. Waterbenders can land a job as a healer if they're talented enough; earthbenders can easily get jobs landscaping or with enough dedication, can become a member of the police force, especially if they have the capacity to learn metal bending. Get creative and just about any job can be made easier with bending.

But jobs generally aren't restricted to benders. Non-benders can thrive in this city, too. Sure, they may not have bending, but they've got their wits. Many of the city's most powerful people are non-benders. With enough hard work, even the poorest of the poor can rise up and get an easier life, bender or non-bender.

Either way, the city's currency is the Yuan. Manual labor jobs pay pretty well, with the more prestigious office work positions paying even more. Vendors rely on how much they sell to make a living, so quality counts!

Crime

Every city has it and Republic City is no exception. There all kinds of triads in this city. A lot of them are full of one type of bender, like the Agni Kais with their firbenders. The Triple Triads, however, are notorious for having firebending, waterbending and earthbending members. Sometimes, when people have it rough, the triads will help them out. But debts always have to be repaid. You either pay them back (with interest), work for them personally to pay off your debt, or get the living daylights beaten out of you. The triads are all groups of organized crime, so every triad has a leader who's an expert on how the system works and what will get the group more money or power. Turf wars are common, especially in the poorer parts of town.

Equalists are another story. Chi blocking—striking a bender at precise points to interrupt their bending temporarily—isn't a crime, per se. It's a valid method of self-defense. The real crime was siding with Amon, whose goal was to permanently remove bending from all benders to bring about peace and equality. Bending is like an extension of one's self, just like a swordmaster's sword. Siding with Amon ment being okay with removing a portion of a person's identity. Amon was revealed to be a bloodbending waterbender who fled the city and was never seen or heard from again. Without Amon, the Equalists fell apart, but there are still those who hold onto the group's sentiments. After all, benders have an easy time oppressing non-benders without much effort; non-benders are usually the victims of triad crimes. The Equalists had a point, but most people feel they went about it the wrong way. At the very least, attention has been drawn to the issue. Being an Equalist doesn't automatically mean jail time; but it sure will get a lot of dirty looks. If caught performing violent acts, however, there's a nice cell waiting.

Finally, there are members of the Red Lotus. Their goal is to kill the Avatar in the Avatar State, which would successfully end the Avatar's ability to reincarnate into a bender of the next element in the Avatar Cycle. Those familiar with the White Lotus might notice a similarity in the names; they would be right. Active members of the Red Lotus are known to have a violent goal in mind; anyone who public makes it known they're a part of the group is likely to end up in a cozy jail cell. Four highly active members of the Red Lotus were Zaheer, Ghazan, Ming-Hua and P'Li. Zaheer is the only member who is still alive. Red Lotus agents could be anywhere, but most are too smart to reveal their identity.
