Snowflake Challenge: A flatlay of a snowflake shaped shortbread cake, a mug with coffee, and a string of holiday lights on top of a rustic napkin.

Challenge #8
Talk about your creative process.

A lot of my process involves staring at a blinking cursor and wishing for the will to write. Does that count? But seriously, it depends on whether I'm writing for myself or am working on something related to an exchange. The former hasn't happened in a while and I keep hoping for that to change but there is a difference. When it comes to writing for myself, a lot of my fics do end up starting with me daydreaming about a particular scene and then end up thinking of a whole story to work around it. Sometimes a 'what if' idea will hit me. Like currently, I've been brainstorming a 9-1-1 (TV) story about platonic Hanahaki, centered around Christopher & Eddie (with Buck/Eddie) and it really came to me because I was thinking about Hanahaki and that led to me wondering about the platonic version and from there, the Eddie & Chris plot bunny struck. I'm sure many other people can relate to having their ideas and motivation to write at the worst possible time too! When I'm in front of a screen it is easier to get distracted by my phone or other tabs.

When it comes to writing for other people, I'm working based of their likes and any possible prompts they may have so I tend to let it linger in my head before narrowing it down to an idea and then I just sit down and write.

If I want to get into a certain mood to write, I will often listen to the type of songs that will help a little. I can't write with music though unfortunately, or at least not when I'm not a deadline. If I have a lot of time, then possibly, but if I am wanting to focus, I need silence. Sometimes, I just need to force myself to write and then I put myself on timed increments and just turn my phone face down and write. It will be something like "okay, I'm going to write for about ten to fifteen minutes straight and then take a couple of minutes break". Once I can get started, I can usually just keep going. If I need a breather, I'll take the break, but often times, I might not need that first one or I'll take the first one and then won't need as many subsequently because I'll be into the story.

For me, it's easy to just fall off writing, even if I enjoy it, so I'm hoping to find some sense of consistency this year. I tried last year but I was a little all over the place so my goal to write a bit every day, just so I can keep it going and not get into the habit of not writing unless I need to. Also I am going to try to remember that not every idea has to be a big story and then just stick to a scene that I want to write, and hope that takes off some of the pressure. Maybe in doing so, some of my routines will change as well.

Hoping for a productive and fun (because this is a hobby and should be fun!) 2026 either way! :D

Challenge #7:
LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

I kind of struggle with these things but I'll try. :D

1. I'm punctual. I like that I'm on time and even if I stress myself out a little when I work backwards, it's less stressful than the alternative. I don't mind being at the airport two hours early and I'm glad I can tell someone a time and unless there are certain unforeseen circumstances, I will be there then.

2. I'm fairly easy to talk to and am a good listener. I am best with at one on one or a couple of people, but I can carry a conversation if they're engaged and am happy to listen to other people/be a shoulder/offer advice if needed.

3. I'm a good baker and a decent cook. I can follow a recipe and can make the right modifications if needed and am aware of my limitations/can do what I know how to do well.

What I've recently finished reading:

The Tiger and the Wolf by Adrian Tchaikovsky, first book in the Echoes of the Fall series. This is a fantasy Bronze-Age-ish world where tribes not only identify with an animal-god, but tribal members can shapeshift into the form of that animal at will. Interestingly, people can see at a glance which animal-tribe people are part of, seeing their "soul"; each also has its own culture which seems appropriate for the associated animal, i.e. the Wolf people are pack-oriented, aggressive, dominating, while the Bear people are big and shambling and prefer their solitary caves. The story follows a teen girl, Maniye, who has two souls and therefore two forms - that of her father, the Wolf that raised her, and that of her mother, a captured Tiger - but it's more of an adult story than YA, even though it's largely a coming-of-age narrative. There are hints of dark things coming, the return of the "Plague People" who the people of this land came here to escape; these are people who have no souls, which again is something plainly visible. I liked this a lot! So I'm reading the second book now, The Bear and the Serpent.

(I should say, I really like the major Bear character, Loud Thunder, who basically wants to sit in his cave with his dogs and sometimes go out and hunt and not be bothered by, ugh, people, but unfortunately has a Destiny, and hates it. Also the major Serpent character - the Serpents in general are super interesting, sort of the wise elders of the world.)

What I'm currently watching:

We finished S1 and are now mid-S2 of The Empress. It's oddly butting up against The Leopard now as we're getting to the Italian provinces of the Austrian Empire agitating for freedom and a united Italy, even mentioned Garibaldi. I love the history of it all, the problems of an old world inexorably moving into the modern times, rulers having to face the collisions of the privilege they love and the reality of being a good leader. Also the costumes, especially the womens' gowns, are fantastic.

What I'm currently playing:

Still Ghost of Tsushima. It's so pretty! And I appreciate that there are a number of female swordsmen and archers, even if it's not strictly historically factual.

I don't normally like asking for favors, but is anyone here good with graphics and willing to do me a quick solid?

Here's the skinny: For Blair's birthday, I'm going to do something crazy and get her a life-size cardboard standee of one of her favorite blorbos, Bode Akuna. The man is over 6 feet tall, so it's going to be pretty impressive.

The thing is, the image I need to upload needs to be "greater than 1MB, greater than 1800x1800 pixels, and in JPEG format." Does anyone know how to increase the size and quality to meet these criteria? If possible, I would also love for the grey background in the imagine I'm using to be made white instead (or made into a transparent background, if you please) to make it easier on the company to prep the character image for printing.

I know how to make an image bigger, obviously, but what I do not know is how to keep the quality up at the same time, if that makes sense?

The spousal unit and I spent 5 days in Normandy, France last year touring D-Day sites as well as Mont Saint Michel and a bit of Paris. We stayed in Bayeux (Tapestry!) and spent two days touring the British and Canadian becahes and sites, and then the American sites. We were able to go back and spend a full day at Pegasus Bridge and the Merville Gun Battery.

We had lunch at the Ham and Jam creperie right across the street from the sadly closed Gondree Cafe. It's so sad now to think of the US going to war with its French and British allies because Drump psychologically needs to invade Greenland.

NGL it was awesome to see the inspiration for my stories in real life and to realized that yeah, I got pretty damned close. I cried a few times, thinking of how much I wrote, how hard I worked at it, and wondering if I would ever get that again. Wonderful. And so personally devastating too.

A few pics below.

Major John Howard Avenue, Pegasus Bridge Sign, and Marker where Horsas crashed

Wally Parr's Number 1 gun "I didn't know it was going to be a quiet war."

Ultra report on Operation Tonga

And last, the gravesite of Lt. Den Brotheridge (maybe not the first casualty of D-Day). As it turns out, there's a very different tradition between American vs Canadian/British fallen. Americans are collected in single, solemn, uniform sites; Canadian and Britsh are interred where they fell. So Normandy is dotted with scores of tiny church graveyards with Canadians and British who died there.

The stained glass windows throughout Normandy churches, including the cathedral in Bayeux, are a mix of traditional Catholic iconography and signs and insignias of the D-Day operations, including parachutes, flying horses, St George and the Dragon, eagles, and service insignia, all in stained glass.

No, don't panic (if you're still here and reading) not out, out as in dead. but on Tumblr someone commented, essentially, whoa, rthstewart is retiring? I didn't know she was that old. Yep. I'm old. Yep, I'm retiring 12/31/26 and will return to fic and chasing wolves and bears in American national parks. I am reminded of the Bujold quote, "Guard your honor. Let your reputation fall where it will. And outlive the bastards". None of those really apply. In my field, reputation probably matters more than honor and if I don't stop soon, I won't outlive the bastards.

So that's all the news here.

In other news, I realized I never shared a particular highlight. I finally made it to Normandy! It was magical. I'll post some pics of my time (2 DAYS) at Pegasus Bridge, Bénouville.

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

1. icons/where to find icons of any of my favorite fandoms/ships, especially Roy Kent/Jamie Tartt (Ted Lasso) and Evan Buckley/Eddie Diaz (9-1-1). More 9-1-1 icons that include Christopher too would be great. :D

2. icon tutorials for people who don't have photoshop/want to improve on skills

3. a mod icon for [community profile] comment_bingo

So, we did not stay in a hotel either before or after our trip.

With the horrible blizzard-type weather and white-out conditions on the road, we needed to leave here at 1:30am. Neither of us got hardly more than three hours of sleep because, you know, our bodies and brains are not used to going to sleep at 7pm. But it was an alright journey, because although conditions were grim, there was no one else on the road at that time except for the snowplows we'd see every so often, or the odd trucker.

We made it to the airport while it was still quiet and sparsely populated. I marveled at the encampments of people sleeping on the floor; the Minneapolis airport is very sleeper friendly and even goes around distributing mats! I didn't know that. We got Dunkin' for breakfast and wandered around looking into some of the shops that were open before departing for our 7am flight, which was quiet and uneventful. I think I managed to fall asleep for an hour or so, in the middle of Parasite. (I'd seen it already anyway.)

We had a nice layover in Seattle, which we used to poke around in more shops and have a meal. There were some live performers in the Seattle airport that were nice to listen to, as well. Our second flight was a mere 38 minutes; I barely had time to knock back my complimentary boxed water.

My parents were of course thrilled to receive us in Pullman. We stopped for a meal on the way to my parents' house, where the dogs and horse were equally as thrilled to see us. Once we were settled, all we really did was sit around. I know we must have eaten dinner at some point but I have no idea when or where, whether we went back out or ate at home. I was so tired that I slept through most of whatever movie they had put on.

The following day, my step dad showed us his workshop, and then took us out and about. We hit this place that is an old warehouse hangar turned massive multi-winged antique shop, where we had a lot of fun sifting through treasures. Blair found a Norse Viking sunstone ring that she really liked, and I snuck back there and purchased it after I had let everyone else wander significantly ahead. I look forward to gifting it to her on Valentine's Day. <3

After that, we had some really awesome pizza, then visited my mom at work. She works at Hobby Lobby, and while I'm not a huge fan of the company, she does get a pretty solid discount, so we picked up a few things I'd been needing for the cake I'm going to make and decorate for Blair's birthday. When we got home, my step dad played some Poker and Blackjack with Blair and I.

That night, my mom had a bit of a breakdown over having lost her wedding ring. We looked everywhere, inside and out, until she figured she must have lost it at work, which was already closed. She had to go back with my step dad in the morning at like 5:30am, when her boss would be there, to go look for it. Luckily she found it in the break room, and all was well.

The next day we played some billiards in my step-dad's garage/workshop thing, which I am apparently slightly better at than expected. We tried to go to a cafe we liked last time, but they were closed. Instead, we had something to eat at this local breakfast stop. All four of us played some cards again, and that evening we went to go see the Rotary Lights. It was sweet. Blair has never experienced an awesome-terrible Jack-In-The-Box taco, so we had dinner there afterward before heading home. The poor dogs freaked out all evening because of the fireworks in the area, and we all kinda went to bed early. I got my midnight kiss, at least.

On New Year's Day, my step dad took us to this local bar/arcade place to play a few rounds of billiards and eat more pizza, and it was really fun. We got coffees after, and then headed home to wait for my mom to get off work. We played more cards all together, and a game called Mexican Train.

The next day, my step dad took us to that cafe we had tried to go to before, this time successfully. After, we got some lunch at Taco Time and then at Blair's request, he drove us around in the hills and valleys along the river, letting us see nature for miles. We all had dinner that night at a place called Zany's (I think) which was a nice time, and then we went for milkshakes after at a place called Sharp's.

And that was it, really. We were dropped at the airport in the early afternoon, and after two plane rides, we arrived back in Minneapolis around midnight and had to make the drive back to La Crosse, getting home around 3am-ish.

While it was a successful trip and it was nice not to have to work or do much of anything other than eat and watch tv and play with animals, I'm glad it wasn't longer. My step dad gets easily frustrated and then veers in the complete opposite direction and gets very drowsy and silly on account of all the weed he smokes for his chronic pain, and my mother is extremely overwhelming with constant anxiety and interrogations. I love my parents but they can be extremely exhausting to be around long term.

Life has returned back to normal post-holiday season. Ho-hum.

Working on finishing up my Fandom Trumps Hate fic that I was forced to ask for an extension on.

Challenge #3:
Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

Where do I even start? Fandom has been such a big part of my life and even when I thought I left, I seem to keep finding my way back and don't have any regrets over that. I remember discovering FFN and then LJ and creating my own in 2007. How weirdly nervous I felt about writing my first fanfic because while I used to write stories as a kid, I felt exposed and self conscious since it was my first time dealing with established characters and also my first fic happened to be m/m. I was 19, fairly sheltered growing up, and a lot naive. Smallville was a big fandom but I felt really welcomed. Sure, I landed myself in some drama now and then, and have said/done things that I wish I hadn't, but I made so many friends. Had way more wonderful, meaningful interactions, than ugly ones. Got to try things and learn things that I wouldn't have thought to if I hadn't joined in on fandom. Improved my writing naturally with practice. Got some great feedback - both kind and useful, over the years.

I was mostly in the one fandom so when the show ended, I gradually grew away from it, and life getting busier coincided with it. I did go back to reading fanfic but I thought I was done writing it. Until 2020. When the pandemic started and I began WFH, I suddenly felt the urge to write. Not just write but for my original fandom (Smallville), for my original ship (Clark/Oliver). I didn't know how I would fit in anymore or how to make friends. I felt like I was worse at it than I was back then.

But fandom may have changed, in look, in pace, in location, but it was still as welcoming as ever. I was able to reconnect with old friends. Find new friends. And even in recent times, get closer to a friend because of our shared fandom/ship! I got to run an AO3-based exchange ([community profile] rarefemslashexchange is on its fifth year! :D) and it always delights me both when new people join in and I can recognize older usernames.

I know I'll always be a little withdrawn - after all these years, I'm still shy about giving my real name online, but the people here have been supportive and accepting of the parts I'm willing to share. The community aspect and how all of us, so different from each other, and in various places all around the globe, can connect and meet and talk to people we would've never run into otherwise. It's a gift. It brings me joy. And I'm so glad I can be apart of it. I hope I can continue to be for as long as possible. :)

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom
Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

I don't have any pets of my own. Dogs are cute, but ever since I was a kid, I was more into cats. However, my parents didn't want a pet and to be honest, I'm self aware enough to know that I wouldn't be able to take care of one. The first apartment we lived in when we moved to California was nice in the sense that there were other people with pets my sister and I could play with. Our upstairs neighbor had four cats and two dogs! They were all very sweet.

My favorite fictional pet is definitely Salem from Sabrina The Teenage Witch. That sarcastic cat was really funny and definitely one of the best parts of the show. I also have a soft spot for Luna from Sailor Moon. I watched Homeward Bound way too many times and I love all three of them but Sassy was the best.

And of course, Shelby from Smallville (see icon). That dog was adorable and I was always happy when they let him pop in. He literally saved Clark's life! And he had good taste, because he liked Lois right away, even when Lois was ... apprehensive. My sister still calls him "Clarkie" though!

As far as my current fandom goes, I'm not trying to fall into stereotypes but I do stand by the belief that they should let Buck get a dog (so close in s8!) and Eddie get a cat. It would be adorable. :)

This is my 5th year participating in the Snowflake Challenge and I really love the way it gives everyone a chance to interact with people that you normally wouldn't. I am not comfortable with just going to someone's journal and talk to them out of the blue, so it's nice that this gives you a chance to do just that. I am looking forward to doing more of that and meet more people on here as well! :)

I'm Glad My Partner Is Not An Orphan

This subject header precludes an interesting story that, in hindsight, is a lot more amusing than stressful.

Yesterday, we got home from our journey around 3am, and crashed. Around noon, we got up and went to the local Co-Op for lunch and some groceries. Blair texted her mom saying we'd be around to get Velma somewhere around 1:30. No response, but we didn't think of it. We decided we wanted to go to another store first before picking up the dog, and Blair texted her again saying "Hey, it'll be closer to like 4pm probably, there's some more stuff we want to do."

At this time, Blair frowned, texted some more, then looked at me and said "It says my mom is only connected via satellite. My text didn't go through." She decided to try her dad. Same thing. She reached out to her sister to see if she knew where they were, or what was up, or if she could contact them. No dice.

I left the table to go upstairs and use the bathroom. When I got back, Blair was looking very worried. She said "We're packing up our lunch and leaving right now. Something isn't right."

Turns out that not only are both her mom and dad impossible to reach (texts not going through, calls going direct to voicemail) but she checked their phones (the whole family has iphones) and it turns out that her mom, her dad, and the dog, all last pinged about two hours prior. Which means after that point, all devices were either dead or deactivated. The ping? A deserted lot in the middle of nowhere.

It didn't seem great. Why would they have last pinged in an abandoned lot in the middle of nowhere? Maybe it's the true crime fans in us, but we couldn't help but let our minds wander. Were they robbed? Were they lured there? Were they dumped there? Their phones destroyed?

We got in the car and started to make our way to Sparta, where her parents live. We got in touch with her sister and her sister's husband, who live only minutes from their parents, and her sister said they would drive over. We got another call back letting us know that neither mom or dad were there. Purse, gone. Jackets, gone. Dad's car gone, mom's still there. Dog, present and accounted for.

No one knows what to make of any of this. They left of their own accord, but that seemed weird, since they were expecting us to come pick up our dog. We're all on speaker phone; we all four decide to go and meet at the coordinates of this abandoned lot. We're all confused and scared, but like, we need to find their parents?

We're about to head to the lot, when finally a bunch of texts come through.

Of course. The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

Their mom and dad had been asked by a friend to come help with someone, and had gone. This friend lived in a blind spot; neither of their phones worked there, because they don't have cell service. They don't even get internet up there. Everything is fine. Everyone laughs about it.

But good lord, we all had to admit that all those details put together didn't look good, and that it was weird. I kept telling them, when we showed up to get our dog, "I'm really glad you guys are still alive!"

Anyway. I'll write up my trip later. I just wanted to talk about this first, hah.
