So... ummmm... this January has been something, huh? Although I don't go out of my way to talk about where I live I don't try to hide it either so let me just say that while things are chaotic in my general area, it's not in my (very) specific immediate area and me and mine are fine. Generally speaking, there's the potential for things here to get as bad, if not worse, as when there were the riots a few years ago but here's hoping it all dies down before then. With the egos involved it seems unlikely (which really says something about the world today that I am even typing that) but, hey, it's possible.

But, in trying not to dwell on any of that or going into details on an unlocked post... craft spam time!

Feast your eyes upon this adorable Werewolf in a Top Hat (made by request and done by adapting a few different patterns)

He's a fine gentleman and tipping his hat to you in greeting. :)

I've also made two rugs
White rug with grey stripe Blue and white knotted rug

The pictures are a bit deceiving, the white and grey one is small-medium sized, 27"x17", while the following blue and white one is one of the larger I've made, 43"x30".

I don't really have a plan or a place for either (nor for the one I'll make out of the fabric strips I'm currently cutting) but upcycling stained/torn sheets and shirts is better than tossing them and I enjoy doing it so who cares.

Have two weeks of [community profile] recthething recs! One MDZS/Untamed fic and tumbr art for that, Merlin, Murderbot and ST:TOS:
I'll Stop the World (And Melt With You) by Rainewritesfanfics (28k)
Summary: Lan Zhan comes from a long line of aerokinetic heroes. Over time, his family came to found the Cloud Recesses School for Young Heroes. Lan Zhan will now be attending this very same school, however he, unlike his relatives, has no powers. To make matters worse, even though Wei Ying is only steps away, they are barely on speaking terms since the incident before summer break. Add in a dash of conspiracy, a school full of ghosts, and cryptic fortunes, and Lan Zhan and Wei Ying are in for a lively first year! (This is a Sky High fusion but I only know the broad strokes of that movie and still thoroughly enjoyed this fic and its accompanying art)

tumblr art:
MDZS/The Untamed
- Something is gained when something is lost (3 panels, LWJ and A-Yuan, oh my heart)
- When had children started growing up so fast? (two LWJ raising A-Yuan sketches, adorable)
- Wei Ying and his ducklings (adorable wwx and the juniors art)

Merlin
- Still waiting for his king… (hauntingly beautiful)

Murderbot
- I just want to watch my shows I can relate, Murderbot. I can relate. (too valid these days)

Star Trek:TOS
- uhura sketch ^^ (love this style)

And, not rec related, but I know there's some due South fans here and I wanted to share an excellent fandom-specific resource I just discovered: A due South tumblr that posts archival stuff from the show like making of episodes and scripts as well as character bios and episode storylines and whatnot. (I really love the first 5 pages of the second draft to the pilot posted here)

Got some groceries, on the way back home some asshat almost ran me over with his damn SUV when I was trying to cross the street. He stuck up his hand like that makes it OK, I swore at him but he had his window closed so I doubt he heard me.
Had an interesting conversation over text w/a friend about Lord of the Rings.
Another article I forgot to link to when I uploaded it several years ago - a scheme to build a huge pyramid, monument and tomb in London, from the Strand Magazine April 1903

https://forgottenfutures.com/library/monument/monument.htm

If I'd ever completed Forgotten Futures 12 one of the adventures would have started with the reconstruction of this monument after an interstellar war, and an eventual interplanetary hunt for Mad Empress Margaret, the theoretically dead empress of the Anglo-Saxon Empire who built the thing and was responsible for several projects that were somewhat dubious, such as changing the tilt of the Earth's axis to give Britain a better climate.
Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

NaNoWriMo completely revolutionized the process of writing for me. I attempted to complete 50,000 words in November two years in succession, with much preparation the second time. Both times I wore out about five days in and couldn't complete it. But it taught me it's possible to write 2,000 words a day, and that even if I wasn't yet able to do it, lots of people were!

I loved both projects I started for NaNo (one became a full-length novel called X, which is probably my favorite thing I've ever written), and though I couldn't complete NaNo, I realized I could just apply that approach to writing the rest of the year (and finish that book!). That's what I've done ever since.

I usually write for about two hours a day, which generally results in around 2,000 words. Doing the writing makes way for more ideas, and I spend a lot more time the rest of the day planning more parts of the book or story, then rinse and repeat.

Oooh. This looks like fun.

So I have a couple I want to do: first, my top ten most listened to songs (since I changed iTunes; so within the last 10 years or so).

1. Oh My! by Monsta X (Totally my daughter E's fault)

2. Reborn by Ghost9 (Also her fault)

3. Bonamana (Super Junior) and Lucifer (SHINee) mashup, found here. From 15 years ago, and still awesome. My oldest believes the two songs are better together, and misses the other one when we hear only one of them.

4. Deja Vu by Ateez. One of my very favorites by them.

5. Bomb Bomp by K.A.R.D. Excellent song!

6. Say My Name by ANS. I was so sad when these ladies disbanded. The song is just a lot of fun.

7. Control by Ghost9. All because of the base line. Totally stolen from Der Erlkönig by Schubert. And a FUN video.

8. Sorry for My English by IN2IT (now Skye). Another of E's favorites.

9. Strawberry Cake by Xdinary Heroes. My bias in cotton candy hair? Yes please. And it's just a good, fun song.

10. Dumb Litty by K.A.R.D. I'm surprised this is after Bomb Bomb. Of the two, I like this one better.

A second list )

Snowflake Challenge: A flatlay of a snowflake shaped shortbread cake, a mug with coffee, and a string of holiday lights on top of a rustic napkin.
Yena is a soloist and a former member of IZ*One. This song, even the short part of it we saw, reminded Vic and I of Engine Sentai Go-Onger, the original of Power Rangers RPM. The Yellow ranger would always say "Smilu Smilu!" and this song embodies that expression.

Challenge #3: Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

I! Am! So! Behind!

Okay this is probably more a love-letter to having friends than it is to fandom as a whole because, uh, you know how some large percentage of anything is garbage? That is true about fandom-as-a-whole, too.

But this is not about that. This is about finding your people.

It is (unfortunately?) not an exaggeration to say that without fandom, I would have like. No friends. I have met every single friend I have through fandom in one way or another. I am, after all, essentially a recluse in real life. And, I mean, once you're out of school how do you even make friends as an adult? Who knows.

(I mean, you leave the house and do things with groups of strangers, and then sometimes strangers turn into friends. But I digress.)

This is, perhaps, curmudgeonly of me, but I find great swathes of fandom intensely annoying and/or angry-making. What can I say! People have wrong opinions and put them out there on the internet for everyone to see!

The cool thing about having friends, though, is you can use them to curate your experience. Between blocking at the drop of a hat and mostly only following friends, I have gone from an Angry Youth, getting all het up about things, to a Normal Emotions Adult, who does not see things to get het up at.

The other cool as shit thing about friends is that you can convince them to join your fandoms and then you don't have to interact with people outside of your friend gr-

Oh my god. Am I also a recluse online??? Fuck. What the fuck. I need to think about this. Post aborted for today. wtf.

Dear fandom:

I have been with you for most of my life. I didn't know what it was called for the first ten years or so, because I didn't realize other people felt like I did.

Our relationship started when I was young, when I found something I wanted to be a part of (a music group - band - in specific). Something that let me explore and find my own way around.

I don't think I realized how much I needed the people in fandom until I found people I actually meshed with. It started, a little, on [fanfic.net](http://fanfic.net/). And then, somehow, I found [TheForce.net](http://theforce.net/), right as I started my Star Wars trilogy. The people there were so... so wonderful and so welcoming! And then Livejournal, where I found a HUGE community of people I could share my love of writing and fandom and (mostly) K-pop with. It was sad when it went down, and apparently it's even worse now.

Still, I have found a couple of lovely communities on Dreamwidth, and that's been good.

As someone mentioned, too: fandom is all about the people, and I've made some good friends along the way. People I don't regret spending time with, and people I miss sometimes because we grew apart. The best parts about the fandom are the people. My life is much richer with people who share my loves with me.
