DW statement on the arrest of journalist Tuğba Tekerek

Turkish journalist Tuğba Tekerek has been arrested in Turkey.

Based on the information currently available to us, her arrest is not connected to her work for DW.

We stand by her as a colleague and expect her case to be handled fairly, transparently and in full accordance with the rule of law.

DW is committed to defending press freedom and freedom of expression worldwide and to upholding the principles of the rule of law.

Tuğba Tekerek is known, among other things, for her reporting on LGBT+ communities in Georgia. A court in Ankara had issued arrest warrants for her and seven others. They were detained in an operation over the weekend targeting LGBTQ+ associations, venues and activists as part of the government’s so-called “Decade of Family and Population” scheme. DW also reported on the arrests.
