Happy Halloween!
Oct. 31st, 2024 07:40 pm Happy Halloween, internet denizens and passers by. I had as much fun as I could with it this year, given my crappy financial state, and did all the Halloween related things I could manage, so there's that.
How about a little possibly paranormal thing that happened to me once? Well once upon a time back in the dinosaur days of the mid-nineties, when I was just a spring chicken, I worked at a truck stop on the highway in my old hometown, making pizza. During one of the many many bad thunderstorms we had that year, the lights went out. Everyone went to the fuse-box, except for me and one older woman, a tiny little thing with a bad leg. We stood looking out the big windows at the front of the store, watching purple bolts of lightning strike the metal grain-bins down the road about every five minutes or so. One bolt struck dangerously close, followed by a roll of thunder you could feel in your teeth. You could feel the electricity lingering in the air. I leaned back against the counter in the silence afterward, cringing away from the windows. I said "Wow, that was a close one!" and a split-second later a low voice close behind me, right next to my ear, said "Sure was!" There was no one behind me.
The older woman had been standing in front of me with her back turned. I asked her how she got her voice that low, and she said, "I thought that was you." It was not me. We just looked at each other like, well. Okay then.
Later I told my manager what had happened, and she told me a long story about how when she was a very young woman there had been a store a little ways down from our location. The man who owned the store also lived there, and one night there was a break-in and he used his gun and fired off a shot in the dark. Supposedly he and and the cops found some blood in the morning, leading away, but they never found who it was that broke-in, or if he was mortally wounded or not.
This was probably complete bull-pucky and she was having some fun with me, cause I was young and my eyes must have looked like dinner plates. But anyway....that.
