Following the recent discussions on
metafandom has highlighted one issue for me - format=light is one of the least readable styles, for me. The line length is too long, and there's too little border at the sides of the page.
But the bigger disadvantage is that there's no navbar on it. There's no easy way to get back to my style, back to the site style, or even back to the journal owner's style. I have to go and change the URL in my address bar, instead of just clicking a link.
Now, not having extra links or the navbar on light style is a deliberate thing, and a good thing if what you want is a light view for your mobile phone or your text-only browser. I wouldn't suggest changing it.
However, I would request that Metafandom change their ways. I understand that the original decision to hardcode format=light on all links was because there were so many unreadable styles on LiveJournal, and it was annoying to have to type it in the address bar every time. However, on Dreamwidth, many more people have the navbar turned on, with its handy link to light style or style=mine, so the need is much less, to the point where the inconvenience to the people who need light format is less than the inconvenience for anybody who needs anything other than light format.
I would also guess that this is an accessibility issue for anybody who needs their own style rather than light style, e.g. if you need low contrast.
Is it just me, or should I try and figure out how to send a request to the metafandom mods?
