However they've put up an online version of the exhibion here: http://humbermuseums.com/exhibitions/ferens-2020-open-exhibition/ in which you can see my book at #117.

I've been making books. Would anyone like one? This particular set are... learning exercises. I'm quite pleased with them, they're functional and nice notebooks, but they're not up to standard for selling or exhibiting. Flaws (which may well not bother you) are: endpapers are a bit lumpy, the pages are not always nicely aligned with the covers (the green one is worst), I've not quite got the hang of marbled edges so there's a tiny bit staining to the edges of pages and there are some grey smudges in the marbled patterns. (Some pages may also be stuck together but you should be able to gently pull them apart.)
The blue one's already spoken for. Would anyone like one of the others? Free to a good home; I'm happy to post if you paypal me the postage cost.

News from London
Apr. 10th, 2014 10:39 pmThis weekend, I went to London, mostly to see
khalinche off (via a complicated process involving Italian cafes and possibly the worst club in the world). However there was also a certain amount of progress made on life goals, and I have returned with:
So exciting!
We also went to see Momentum at the Barbican, a mesmerising artwork made from computer-controlled pendulums which emit light (either a ring of light out sideways, or a spotlight downwards) and hum/crackle/clang. We spent a good half hour just appreciating the patterns. Very meditative. (On until 1st June, and highly recommended: http://www.barbican.org.uk/artgallery/event-detail.asp?ID=15620 )

A Nightmare Of Horror!
Jan. 19th, 2014 06:07 pmI am attempting to achieve something concrete each week this year. This is what I did in the first week of the year:

Whilst searching for inspiration I came across the idea of a laminated book, and I have a laminator, so... A Nightmare Of Horror! is made from an old calendar of monster movie posters, which I had lying around in the hope I could make something useful from it. I cut out all the bits of picture that appealed to me and then arranged them into 5 pages roughly by colour. The pages themselves ended up arranged by size; I wanted to be able to see everything from the front of the book, so arranged the pages with the largest constituents at the back. There's an extra page at the back to provide a black background.
Here's another picture of it from the back of the main pages :-)

There are pictures of the individual pages at: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~clareb/pictures/books/index.html

I dreamt about Yuletide, except that instead of fics people gave each other comics and illustrated stories. There were some lovely crossovers, e.g. things illustrated in the style of the Very Hungry Caterpillar. I was a bit sad to wake up and realise it didn't exist. Maybe I need to organise an art swap (in my copious free time).
In more successful art news, ebay and twitter have conspired to give me an excellent book idea for a tribute to Iain Banks for Worldcon.
(Also, tangentially arty, I have resolved to wear more nail varnish, as this stops me biting my nails, and have treated myself to some proper posh nail varnish to make it more likely that I will make the effort. Today I have happy-making sparkly purple-blue of *ahem* about this shade: http://the-smiling-pony.deviantart.com/art/Rarity-01-252735198)

What I have been doing
Jun. 29th, 2013 06:50 pm1) Epidemiology
This is mostly what I have been doing for the past 6 months. Particularly during May, which didn't really have room for anything else in it (goths aside). Exams were last month and were exhausting - apparently I'm not as young as I was 13 years ago. I think I acquitted myself well though. This month involved finishing off lactures and two assignments for the remaining module. I now have one thing remaining, which is the assessed assignment for this module (due end of August, so things can slow down a bit).
2) Brains
Currently suffering from wonky vision in my left eye (and not much else, that's about it for brokenness at the present). Still waiting for a bloody referral. Eye investigation included a trip to the optician last week. Am now persuaded I ought to have glasses, especially if wonkiness doesn't go away. Annoyingly this is not the best week to decide this, as
bjh21 and
stephdiary are both away which greatly impairs frame shopping. Also I have a referral to the eye clinic for a proper hardcore retinal scan, and am wondering whether to start an Addenbrooke's clinic bingo card...
3) Music
As supplied by, variously, Last July, Public Service Broadcasting, Whitby, and Leipzig. I will tell you about my latest obsession but they cannot be contained in a post which already holds so many other things.
4) Making stuff
A bit limited, but I have managed the odd thing or two, and even a book (and a pigeon). I must update my galleries and then post about these...

Cross-stitch
Jun. 9th, 2013 08:59 pmHave decided I'm never going to get round to my remaining cross-stitch kits, so onto ebay with them. (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/ceb28/m.html if you're interested.) (ETA: also boots.) ETA again: if you bid for any of these and would like to collect from me in person, let me know and I'll add a free collection option to the postage.
I have a lovely V&A Viking boat cross-stitch cushion cover that I'm never going to finish - would anyone like to give it a good home? It's about 1/3 done, all the necessary bits are there and the threads are still neatly sorted. It's 14-count aida so easy on the eyes.
The finished thing looks like this:

And it's about this finished (and this crumpled):

Busway graffiti
Apr. 19th, 2013 05:37 pmA few months ago, the lights under the Long Road busway bridge stopped working. Someone has responded with this rather lovely piece of graffiti...

Yesterday I visited Norwich, city of treats, to deliver my latest book to an art exhibition there (PLUG: http://www.assemblyhousenorwich.co.uk/index.php5/en/arts/artshow - book photos to follow) and incidentally to visit my favourite book shop (PLUG: http://www.thebookhive.co.uk/ - whenever I go there I want pretty much everything in the shop). I adore Norwich but it is bad for my wallet. I returned with three shiny new books, starry ribbon, a belt, a spiky headband, and lavender chocolate. Also some of the best sundogs I've ever seen on the train ride back.
I will probably be visiting again on 4th May, to see the exhibition I'm in, and also http://turnthepage.org.uk/, and for more book shopping, and general wandering around lovely lovely Norwich, if anyone feels like joining me. (And if you need further incentive, the co-op at Norwich station has cuddly garlic!)

Masters course lectures are getting longer and longer... In the first couple of modules they took an hour per lecture, or maybe 2 for the longer ones. This module I keep being greeted with "expect this session to take 8 hours". There's a 12 hour one yet to come. They do suggest stopping points, but it's a lot more work than I was expecting.
Current art project is going to involve punching 972 holes, since the printer registration is imperfect and I can't see a way of lining up multiple sheets at once. Have set myself a quota of 60 holes per day.
Why does banana bread always take so long to bake?

Assorted good things
Oct. 19th, 2012 09:00 pmI've been accepted for another art show! The Norwich lot want me back again, for their open exhibition next April/May: http://www.assemblyhousenorwich.co.uk/index.php5/en/arts/artshow
Audience participation: I plan to make a transparent book of Conway's Game Of Life, with each page being a state. The idea is that as you look through it you ought to be able to see the grid evolving off into the misty future. I was mentioning this to people at the pub yesterday, and lots of you had good ideas which I've now forgotten. I'm after suggestions for interesting Game things to print; I'm aiming for maybe 100-150 states (though open to fewer or maybe even more if there's a really cool idea, though transparencies are pricey); no larger than A4, so grid size compatible with seeing something interesting at a sensible resolution at that size; undecided as to whether the pattern should repeat; must look interesting whilst it's doing it :-).
Current book project is almost done and should be at the photographing stage next week.
I'm doing a masters! In epidemiology, with the <finest-Victorian-explorer-accent>London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine</f-V-e-a>. They're terribly well organised. I have spent the last 2 weeks trying to force some stats back into my head.
Last week I went to Copenhagen for work and had a lovely few days full of useful meetings and sightseeing (though I managed to go when everywhere was shut, curses).
In addition, people have been plying me with presents, and tomorrow I'm going flint knapping, about which I am LUDICROUSLY EXCITED.

To fund the exhibition, the Library is selling memberships (for a modest fee) which get you, among other things, access to a members' only blog with contributions from the artists. If you find these posts interesting then please consider joining the Library to see what all the other artists have to say. More details at http://thelibraryoflostbooks.blogspot.co.uk/
The first thing I've been doing with my books is to save them from the pulp pile in another way, by preparing them to add to the wonderful Project Gutenberg. Before I change them beyond recognition I want to make the original text available for anyone interested to read. In case you haven't heard of PG: it's a volunteer-produced repository of (mostly) out of copyright books converted into e-books, 40000 of them, free to download.
For many years I have been a contributor to the largest supplier of these e-books - Project Gutenberg Distributed Proofreaders. Back in the early days of PG, e-books were created by devoted individual contributors. PGDP spread the workload - and allowed many more people to contribute - by creating an interface to allow lots of people to do a little bit of work on the same book. You sign up (and I would encourage you to do so :-), choose a book, and are given a page to check. And then, if you like, another... As a way to waste time on the internet it's fantastic - highly addictive, a great community, and useful at the same time!
Of course there is a lot of work involved in getting a book ready to go through the site. Over the past month I have been installing hardware and software to make my scanner run, checking copyright status, scanning the books, splitting and tidying up the scans, finding an OCR engine, making it work in German, OCRing, making nice copies of the figures, and filling in information for the proofreaders. Now, however, everything is ready to roll. If you'd like to get involved then hop along to http://www.pgdp.net and look out for Botticelli and Andrea del Sarto.
A page and a half fell out of Botticelli whilst I was scanning it. I may need to see if I can make it a bit more cohesive...

Creative successes
Apr. 9th, 2012 09:39 pmA lovely Eastercon, excellent programming and a lot of new faces on panels. I had a fantastically successful art show; I sold 9 of the 12 pieces I took and have come back with more money than I started with (by £2.30 which I will have to spend on a congratulatory treat, any suggestions?). If you commented about things you'd like to buy or commission then I'll be in touch in the next couple of days to discuss.
However all this is eclipsed by the news that I had my application to the Library of Lost Books accepted. I am really very excited! http://thelibraryoflostbooks.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-project.html

Mar. 1st, 2011 07:19 pmIn August I'm going to be an exhibiting an artist's book at the Assembly House in Norwich, as part of their first annual open art show.
I wasn't really expecting that to work!
