I'm kind of desperate and I need some advice :<

During the start of the year, I discovered that Bruno had ticks. I promptly freaked out, bought anti-tick everything (soap, shampoo, etc.) and went on a frenzy. I found out that the neighbor's dogs also had ticks and the parents and I agree that the ticks had probably migrated across the wall separating our lots and had infested Bruno — we don't let Bruno out of our house; he has free range of the garden but we don't really walk him because some neighbors let their big dogs out by themselves and these dogs are not friendly in any way.

When summer started, the ticks slowly died out, but now that the rainy season has started again (I live in a tropical country) they're back and as huge as ever D: I have no idea if it's really because of the heat or whatnot that they disappeared in the first place.

The shampoo and soap doesn't really work and I've tried talking to the neighbors about their tick problem (because even if Bruno's tick-free, if their dog isn't, then Bruno's still going to get re-infected at some point) but it seems like they're having trouble getting rid of the damn things too.

Any suggestions?

This is a great documentary on dog behavior, how they differ from wolves, and how they may have been domesticated. I really enjoyed it.

Hi :) I have a question about vaccinations. I have a 6 year old Pom that I recently adopted and a 7 year old Brussels Griffon that I've had since he was 8 weeks old. My Griffon has had all his recommended vaccinations (the puppy series, then 1 yr booster, then 3 yr boosters thereafter). The woman who I adopted the Pom from said she is due in May for another series of shots (she did them herself, so I have no records for the Pom, unfortunately).

Given that my Griffon has had so many vaccinations already in his life (and given that my Pom has a somewhat unknown history of vaccinations, or at the very least, one I cannot confirm) I was thinking about doing a vaccine titer on both of them to test their immunity in lieu of just taking them in for shots again. I'm going to continue to get them both rabies as scheduled, but it's the other stuff (DHLPP) that I'm wondering about. It seems to be coming to light that repeated vaccinations are both unnecessary and sometimes dangerous. What do you guys think? Have you ever had the titers done, or have any info about that?

Both also have a history of allergies, although my Griffon has never had a reaction to a vaccine (we always have to do them in at least two visits because he is small) and there was no mention of the Pom having any allergy issues with regards to vaccinations, but again, I tend to err on the side of caution with her because I don't actually know her history for certain.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer!

I have been a very...reclusive mod here and I'm sorry for that. Hopefully we can become an active community on here once more!

So, have some pictures of my boys. Apologies to the people on my friends list who have already seen these!

Here in the Southeastern United States, we managed to have a snow + ice storm. I can't think of a more perfect chance to let our dogs run around like crazies in the glorious white stuff.

You'll have to excuse the occasional human in the pictures, our dogs were being too cute with us to not include the shots where we're present!

My posting here got mangled and I apologize for that! But! I have a great excuse, his name is Tucker. My parents decided that they needed another dog for their collie mix, since I was moving out and taking my boys with me. So two weeks till moving, they adopted the cutest puppy, which I had to babysit quite a bit.

He has such bravado for being only 12 weeks old. He was fostered with a nine month old German Shepherd, who I think taught him how to be brave and demanding. I have never seen a puppy this young have such confidence. He's been a blast to help train and I'm certainly going to miss him now that I've moved away.

I just found this due to a post about it on my reading page, and joined.  I've always loved dogs, though haven't had an opportunity to own as many as I'd like.  Many years ago when my mother and I walked into an adoption area in a local vet's office, a ball of fluff named Polly stood on her hind legs and looked at us, and the bond was formed immediately.  We brought her home where she promptly waddled in the door, marched over and peed on the rug in front of the fireplace making it hers.  Even my screensaver says "Polly's House".  She's mixed breed, which I tend to think are the best dogs around, pardon my bias.  A combo of Australian Shepherd and Chow, so the vet's told us.  This mixture translates into a dog that's extremely intelligent, assertive, stubborn, fiercely loyal, affectionate, playful, and fuzzy like WHOA.   If I had adopted another dog early on she may have accepted it, but now she's Queen of All She Surveys, and would never tolerate another four legged interloper into her kingdom.  It's just as well, as I don't think I'd have the energy to deal with another one besides her right now!  But, I love her to pieces and am proud to be owned by her.

I can upload photos on LJ, but for some reason it's different here, and I can't figure out how.  Gotta work on that. But you can see a photo of her in my avatar.

Looking forward to hearing more stories and seeing more photos.

Just found this comm and it may be my new favorite. I have 3 dogs that I would love to introduce to all of you. But first I suppose I should introduce myself real quick: I'm Gabs, 24, and with a lifelong love of animals. In addition to the 3 boys below, I also have 2 cats at the moment and am kitty-sitting my mom's 2 cats while she looks for a place to live. Now, my boys!

Excited about this community and happy to be here with my boys!

Hi everyone,

I have an Aussie Cattle Dog named Bloo. He's smart, funny and more than a little OCD. He's been to two levels of training at PetsMart. He needs to be worked with pretty constantly or he indulges in nervous behaviors like chewing his own feet. A bored Bloo is not good! Because I'm not independently wealthy I can't really keep taking him to endless PetsMart classes (they were great though, just out of my budget most months!). I'm glad this community is here. :)

Bloo wishing someone, anyone, would throw a frisbee for him. Or a ball. Or a squeaky. Or a stick. But Mom says no sticks. It's all very sad. Also, those little orange training cones are horrifying. I think they try to bite my rump when I go by. Really. My mom doesn't believe me, but you do, right?

I want to take a moment to thank our LOVELY [personal profile] sundog for coding for nearly three hours to get not only THIS layout, but [community profile] equidae's layout into tip top shape. They deserve brownies and snuggly blankets. The coding gave me a serious case of flail.

Anyway, thankies lovely Kazi (& Mr. FIX-IT) for fixing it all back right again - even the aspects that were invisible to you. You are 'teh best'.

BTW, this is how broken code makes Zoran feel.

Hello! I'm Beatriz, a fourth year psychology major in the University of the Philippines. I've loved dogs for as long as I can remember and just last year, my parents brought home an adorable Labrador/Dachshund mix puppy that we named Bruno.

I love him to bits, but I will admit that I haven't really been there for him -- I only go home during weekends because my university's in a different city from where I live. No one at home cares enough to attempt to train him in any way, but they take care of everything else (like giving Bruno food and water and bathing him) while I'm not around. During the weekends, I try to play with him for at least an hour or so, but schoolwork makes it hard.

Hey guys! I'm just a dog lover at the moment. My family has always owned cats, and while I'm 23 I'm still living at home for a while because the economy I think it's fun.  DX  I've ALWAYS wanted to own a Siberian Huksy (or Husky / Shepherd mix), but I am willing to admit that with my lifestyle the way it is, I'm probably not an ideal husky owner. The energy and high-maintenance training I'd do fine with, but as I own a horse and spend quite a lot of my day at a barn with said horse, the on-leash bit of typical husky life probably wouldn't work as well unless I was able to find the perfect husky, even with training.

I have developed an affection for Australian Cattle Dogs ("Blue/Red Heelers") lately, as well as a number of other spitz-type breeds.

But, until I'm more financially secure, (and living elsewhere, probably) I live vicariously on my friends' and relatives' dogs. I do read and learn about training tactics and philosophies as much as I can; I've always been told that I'm a natural when it comes to dogs, but that probably doesn't actually mean much other than that I'm sensitive to canine body language and my own cues/posturing.

In conclusion, I'm really looking forward to hearing about everyone else's dog(s)!  =)

Hello, I'm Moogle. I work at an animal hospital, so I see a lot of dogs, but I don't have one of my own currently. My family had a lab-cocker-beagle-whatever mix named Luke, but he died several years ago in the care of my aunt. He lived a long happy life and was spoiled rotten.

So there's that.

Hi! I'm Rue, age 22, attending nursing school in New York. I am described as "that dog girl" by a lot of people, though I have equally large portions of my life given to medicine, horses, birds and music. The dog love must stand out the most, I guess!

Currently I'm not in a living situation where I can have a dog; my boyfriend and I make too little money and live in a pet-free complex. Someday I hope I will be the kind of person who is home enough to have a dog again. The love of my life, Flash, a GSD mix, died in 2005 of lymphosarcoma at the too-young age of eight.

(He didn't even live long enough to develop the hip dysplasia we were waiting for. Blessing in a curse, I guess, because of how much he loved to run.)

It kind of hurts me to talk about him sometimes, and the time with him was before my family had a digital camera -- plus, he was afraid of cameras -- so I have no pictures to show. :( But this icon is extremely close to how he looked. The circumstances of his death were horrible; he went through a course of chemotherapy, recovered and his rabies vac caused a recurrence. Chemo was torture for him and nobody could bear to put him through it again; the worst moment of my life by far has been when I was forced to make an appointment to have him euthanized. Either that or the walk I took him on the night before the morning I knew he was to die, even if he didn't.

But I don't want to dwell on his death. So a little about his life: he was a rescue. A trucker found him tied to a tree on the side of a highway, all skin and bones and took him to the humane society, where he lived for a year. He was Pet of the Week in the local paper. Someone adopted him, took him back. We adopted him later (not having known about Pet of the Week, actually) thanks to what I was convinced was the 'magic dog book'; I brought it home from the library one day when I was just-turned-nine and my mom got me a dog that very day! Because she and my dad had been secretly looking at dogs that very morning. She told me they narrowed it down to two and of the two I picked Flash. That day. Because my mom felt guilty. She didn't ... tell my dad. Surprise new dog! He took it well because he grew up with dogs. We were lucky, there. Found out why he got taken back when we had him taken in to get neutered to find that he had undescended testes and the neutering was going to cost $425 instead of $40.

It kind of went like this:
VET: *calls* Do you want us to go ahead with the rest of the surgery or would you like to have him sewn up?
MY DAD: Are you crazy?
VET: People have refused to do this before and left the dog intact, but it could cause testicular cancer or --
MY DAD: Neuter the dog, ma'am.

My dad is kind of awesome. My parents also coughed up $11,000 (yes that is the correct number of zeros) to treat his cancer when he got it instead of just putting him down, because I was in high school and -- my parents loved this dog. My parents also won't talk about him because they're bad grievers, but I know that I need to talk about him to remember him right.

He had a hard beginning, but he had a great, if painfully short, life being my psychiatric service dog once we finished training. We went everywhere together. As a full-size GSD mix with a severely underweight nine-year-old, he was bigger than me. This makes for a great psychiatric animal, seriously. I grew into him but he was basically always even with me in weight -- I never reached any taller than 5'.

Due to his background of being abused for most of his early life (he was missing teeth & toes and our vet told us he showed signs of being beaten as a puppy; no doubts on my part) he never really learned how to "play" like a normal dog. His version of fetch was to catch the ball when you threw it, chew on it for a little while and then walk away, assuming eventually you would throw it again. He liked his chew toys but got frighteningly aggressive sometimes during a tug-of-war because of how his food likely got taken away from him when he was a baby. He was also afraid of flashing lights (hence the name, which is fully Jumpin' Jack Flash Winter), including cameras, and absolutely terrified of thunderstorms. He would attempt to hide under the bed. Large dog, small bed, no go. Actually, he was afraid of water, period. We never found out if he could swim because he wouldn't, but he did like when he got us skunked that one time because we got to get baths in tomato paste and that was yummy, okay? (Thankfully my mom knew to wash his eyes out; I hadn't learned that yet at the time and was also busy washing me. Yes, I brought the dog in the shower with me. It was streamlined that way.)

But Flash was an amazing dog with a wonderful personality who loved everyone who didn't ever attempt to strike him (or me). He always knew how to cheer everyone up. He loved spending time with other dogs. He loved hanging out on the beach, for all he wouldn't go into the water. We joked he had a drinking problem because of how he would drink too fast and then wheeze and then forget to hesitate before starting to drink again.

I miss my boy every day. ♥ Sorry for the ramble!

I've watched a LOT of documentaries in my time. I practically grew up on Discovery, long before Animal Planet came on the scene (and honestly, still prefer the science-ier side of Discovery over the cutesy, theatrical side of Animal Planet), and this documentary was outstanding. It's a September 2010 production, with some very fresh, compelling arguments, especially in the "Nature vs Nurture" field. Among the studies:

  • Dogs learning to read human emotion.
  • Humans learning to read dog body language.
  • Human interpretation of barking.
  • Wolves raised in captivity (Nature vs Nurture)
  • Selective breeding for domesticity (SIlver Foxes, 50 year project)
  • Selective breeding for aggression (Silver Foxes, 50 year project)
  • Embryonic transfer into surrogate parents of domestic vs feral (Nature vs Nurture)
  • Domesticity's effects on appearance, DNA and chemicals.

  • You can watch this movie instantly on Netflix if you have an account. If you've seen the documentary, what are your thoughts and reactions?

My name is SabR, and I’m a 24 year old Georgia-native. Kazi & I founded Canidae after we were unable to find a dog community which met all of our needs here on Dreamwidth. We hope that Canidae can become that community, with a little exposure and a lot of grunt work on our behalf.

I started my ‘career’ with dogs at an early age - my father is a canine officer, so I grew up in a home of dogs - at first our hunting Brittany, Duke. Then came Xacko [Zock-oh], our German import. My father bought me my first dog, Hobby, when I was eight years old. He was a Smooth-coated Fox Terrier, and an absolute terror - when I was about ten years old, my dad made me rehome him with my Uncle because he was picking fights with our second Shepherd, a Czech import, and was going to turn himself into a small chewtoy. He adjusted beautifully to his new life and lived to be a ripe old seventeen years of age. But that’s another story.

Our shepherds were military background, narcotic and bite-work trained. I grew up training in German, and later Czech commands, albeit mis-pronounced. I also grew up with a harder approach to training than is necessary for most animals, but it has given my a unique path to training that has brought me to where I am today - learning how to train with a more positive approach.

I am now owned by a 16 month old Russian Wolfhound. He is, appropriately, trained in Russian, though he hails from Kentucky. He’s teaching me MANY a thing, but mostly tiny lessons in patience. It’s only been two months, but I know it must be love, because I haven’t killed him yet :P

I’m a learning project. A good candidate for a mod, don’t you think? :P

Everyday, I try to learn something new about dogs, something that questions the how and why of the way I have been taught to do things (which is so very often wrong) and something that can improve my dogs life in the long run. I think that a strong internet community can really help with that process, and we had that at livejournal, but it’s time for a new era - one that is, hopefully, less inundated with asshattery from Mother Russia.

Anyhow, hope to get to know our upcoming members in the weeks and months to come!
