Storytelling is not separate from functionality. It strengthens it. Every Parkin project starts with listening to the history of a site, the daily reality of a healthcare worker mid-shift, the anxiety of a patient navigating an unfamiliar corridor. When that thread guides our design process, something fundamental shifts. Details like natural light at the end of a corridor, the texture of a material chosen to reflect local history, and the moment a space opens up and signals "you're welcome here" are never decorative. They're doing real work. For the communities we design for, these moments matter. Mental health patients deserve more than a hospital room. They deserve dignity. At Western Memorial Regional Hospital (WMRH) in Corner Brook, NL, the entire top floor is given to mental health – and biophilic design runs through every design decision we made in collaboration with B+H Architects. Panoramic views, two landscaped roof terraces, naturally lit rooms in calming tones, and private transfers directly from the ED. WMRH is the first hospital in the region with dedicated Indigenous spaces, including smudging areas and a Mi'kmaq teepee sculpture. Its exterior mirrors the local birch forests, rooting it in the Newfoundland landscape it serves. And Canada's largest geothermal system in a healthcare setting runs it without fossil fuels. We are proud to have achieved a hospital design wherein healing extends beyond the patient to the community and the land. #HealthcareArchitecture #BiophilicDesign #HospitalDesign #ParkinArchitects NL Health Services

The architects at Parkin Architects spend their days designing accessible and inclusive spaces for people to move through, welcome to all. It’s the same philosophy that drives their Sun Run team, where everyone participates at their own pace, progress is celebrated over performance, and encouragement trumps pressure. Some runners are going after PBs, while some are just looking to overcome nerves at the start line. Like Joan Diaz, whose first Sun Run came in 2025. “Despite those fears,” she remembers, “I found the courage to push forward. Crossing the finish line was a huge personal accomplishment and showed me that I could overcome my fears.” Another first-time runner, Janet Olsen especially appreciated the team support. “Meeting up before the run,” she says, “the excitement was contagious. Lining up with familiar faces in a huge crowd made the wait to start the run more tolerable.” So, while team members train for the Sun Run for many different reasons, as a group they’ve drawn up a blueprint for stronger relationships, wellness, and lasting memories. “My favourite memories are the laughs we share before, during, and after the race,” says team member Ethel Stone. “The team's encouragement always makes it a great experience.” Considering creating a team with your coworkers? The buildings matter. But so do the conversations that shape them. From BC to Nova Scotia, the challenges facing Canadian healthcare are too complex to solve in isolation. They need open conversations – and people willing to have them. Recently, Parkin team members have contributed to leading healthcare forums across Canada. Associate Amrish Vedak joined infrastructure leaders in Burnaby for Western Canada’s premier healthcare forum, while Rebecca MacDonald, M.ARCH and Gina Martino took the stage in Halifax as presenting faculty at the Atlantic Canada forum. Their participation reflects a deeper commitment to sharing what we know, learning from others, and contributing to how healthcare gets planned, designed and delivered across Canada. West Lincoln Memorial Hospital was designed for Grimsby – the community, the character, the people who'll actually walk through the doors. That means seniors were genuinely front of mind: clear signage, private rooms, intuitive routes, abundant natural light. Sustainability was built in from day one, not bolted on - LEED Silver-targeted systems, high-efficiency infrastructure and on-site solar power across 192,135 sq. ft. of acute and outpatient care. We are so proud of what our team and partners accomplished in making this vital healthcare facility a reality, and grateful to see it recognized by Healthcare Snapshots. Hospitals don't have to feel like hospitals. Imagine a view of Lake Ontario right from your hospital bed. Gardens just outside your door. In the Michael Lee-Chin & Family Patient Tower at Burlington’s Joseph Brant Hospital & Foundation, that's not a luxury - it's the baseline. Every decision, from floor plan to window placement, was guided by one question: how do we build a space where healing actually feels possible? The result: 70 per cent single-patient rooms for privacy and infection control; biophilic design guiding every acute-care room with a therapeutic view of the lake; natural light, gardens and nature-inspired artwork woven throughout. Design isn't just about aesthetics. It's about what happens to people inside a building - and about supporting the staff who show up every day to care for them. #HospitalDesign #BiophilicDesign #ParkinArchitects

Colour has never been more important in correctional facilities, as demonstrated by the Rankin Inlet Men’s Healing Facility, built for the Government of Nunavut Ministry of Justice. Colour can affect mood, sleep, and aggression among a detention centre’s population. Using wood-look materials on furniture and in kitchen facilities can help make areas feel more like residential spaces, while colours with strong connections to the natural world can alleviate stress and anxiety. These design choices create spaces that are less alienating and more welcoming to inmates, staff, and visitors, fostering a sense of safety, connection, and rehabilitation. #JusticeDesign #CorrectionalFacility #ParkinArchitects

Parkin’s Toronto team showcased accessibility and inclusive design in an interactive Accessibility in Action workshop, featured on Global News Toronto. Parkin’s Accessibility Advisors, Anika Abdullah and Ryan Bui, led a guided neighbourhood walk and collaborative discussion to explore how design shapes daily experiences in the built environment. Designers assessed accessibility features and barriers along the route, such as sidewalks, crossings, entrances, wayfinding, public spaces, and workplace interiors. The session offered practical insight into how thoughtful, people-centred design can support dignity, independence, and belonging for people of all ages, abilities, identities, and backgrounds. Thank you to our Accessibility Team and all participants for helping make this important conversation visible.
