Families across Venezuela are facing the devastating aftermath of powerful earthquakes. For communities who have already living through a humanitarian crisis, this disaster has made a difficult situation even worse. ⚽In Kenya, an estimated 13,000 girls drop out of school each year due to pregnancy—that’s enough girls to fill a World Cup stadium like Toronto's BMO Field. They face challenges linked to their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) including stigma, early marriage, a lack of support and childcare. SHE SOARS* partners like @reprorights are helping young mothers return to class in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia. Through the project, women’s rights organizations and youth-led organizations are leading advocacy efforts to create stronger, more supportive policies and guidelines to support girls’ rights. As global supply chains face increasing pressures from climate change, conflict, and economic uncertainty, new forms of partnership and investment across governments, businesses and communities are needed to address today's global challenges. This week at the Calgary Stampede, CARE Canada was pleased to convene parliamentarians and leaders from government, business and philanthropy to explore how public-private partnerships can strengthen food systems, build more resilient supply chains and create lasting opportunities for communities around the world. Hosted by the Vice Chair of our Board, the Hon. Lisa Raitt, and our CEO, Barbara Grantham, ICD.D, the discussion opened with remarks from the Honourable Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State for International Development. We were also pleased to welcome the Honourable heath macdonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and philanthropist and seed expert Wayne Gale, whose perspectives highlighted the importance of resilient agriculture and global food systems. For decades, CARE Canada has partnered with governments, local organizations and the private sector to improve lives around the world. Today, we are bringing these relationships together in new ways, combining public investment, business expertise and capital, and community leadership to strengthen food systems, build more resilient supply chains and deliver lasting impact. Foreign aid helped them change their lives. Now it's all at risk. Nyalang, Angelina and Regina each found confidence, skills and community through a CARE-supported women's centre in South Sudan after their lives were disrupted by conflict and displacement. Today, funding cuts have forced many of the centre's services to stop. Women are still arriving for help, but there is little left to offer them. Aid cuts aren't just numbers on a budget sheet. On the eve of a national holiday, when many families were gathered in their homes, two powerful #earthquakes struck #Venezuela. This disaster has devastated communities that were already struggling. More than a third of Venezuelans live in extreme poverty.
