Essene wrote this amazing drabble for a prompt at Open on Sunday: title of a Tori Amos song (Blood Roses)

Dru let her fingertips dance over velvet soft petals. Drank in the boquet’s vivid color and felt her pulse quicken at the thought he’d put into them. They were artfully arranged at the table’s center, long stems adorned with wicked thorns.

She spun with a delighted flourish, reaching for him, “They’re beautiful my precious.”

“Only the best for my girl.” Lips parted with desire, he drew his dark beauty close.

“Where did you get them?”

Spike’s eyes flicked towards the girl who lay prone in the corner, stray stems protruding from her neck. “Let’s just say they were…donated.”

Title: The Way We Live Now
Author: Labingi
Pairing/Rating: Spike/souled!Drusilla; PG-13

The author says this was their very first fic, and it's a stunning debut. Characters like Drusilla are difficult to write well without falling into all sorts of precious pits, and too many examples in fandom end up serving as cautionary tales. This is one of the few that shines well and truly: In the details of Dru's dialogue, the cracks and warps of her nature, her conflicting reactions to her ensoulment, and in Spike's understanding and acceptance. Will the upcoming comics be half this strange, beautiful and disturbing? We can only hope.
