Designing Skylines

Posted by ,

While the LEGO Architecture series has been around since 2008, the Skyline sub-genre only made its first appearance in 2016.

Ever since then LEGO fans around the world have delighted in creating their own MOCs using the distinctive skyline style. You could probably say I’m one of those fans: to date I have created over 40 of my own skylines using Bricklink Stud.io.

Instead of depicting world-famous cities, my skylines mostly portray popular fictional worlds, including “Star Wars,” “The Lord of the Rings,” and “Harry Potter.”

MOCing minifigures like a pro

Posted by ,

Have you ever wondered how to create the perfect customised minifigure? This article by guest author Zander will show you how:

On the face of it, there’s nothing to MOCing minifigures. Attach a head and some legs to a torso and voila! a minifigure. But creating great minifigures is not, for the most part, about the technical aspects. It’s about the art. And like all art forms, knowing the basics can get you a long way to becoming a master.

When I started MOCing minifigures back in 1993, AFOLdom was not the well established, interconnected community it is today. Each of us was off doing our own thing, so I had to work out for myself what worked, what didn’t and why. Here are a few guidelines and suggestions that I developed over the years, plus learnings I picked up from other AFOLs along the way. I hope they help.

Connecting Clikits and System parts together

Posted by ,

For some reason Clikits sets are much derided but many of their parts have the potential to be used with System parts to provide decoration, greebling and even facilitate connections that are otherwise impossible.

While huwbot was busy running the site yesterday I dug my daughters' collection of Clikits parts out of storage and, with the help of Alice and my wife, sorted them out. Having done so I thought I'd have a play and see what they can be used for.

If you're curious, read on...

How to make a cheap, but effective, light-box to help improve your LEGO photography

Posted by ,

Writing reviews at Brickset over the last few years has given me great pleasure. For me, part of the journey has been learning how to take better photographic images of my sets. I have researched how to improve the lighting that I use for my photography. As a result, I have found instructions for making an inexpensive light-box.

Maybe you take photographs of your LEGO for placing in reviews, or perhaps you list your LEGO on eBay or similar auction sites and need good quality images to improve your chances of making a sale.

Read on if you would like to see how easy it is to make an inexpensive light-box that will help improve the quality of the images that you take of your LEGO or small models.

Building Tutorial: Avengers Logo

Posted by ,

LEGO video games often include digital models which inspire builders to try to replicate these designs in reality. Unfortunately this is sometimes not possible as parts are unavailable in certain colours and the physics of real bricks does not always work as it does in the game.

The new LEGO Marvel's Avengers video game includes one such model of the Avengers logo which can be seen on loading screens as shown above. This has sparked a great deal of interest so now seems like the perfect opportunity to publish the first in a new series of articles which has often been requested: building tutorials.

Having studied the logo shown on the loading screens I have recreated the model in physical bricks and you will find a full breakdown of the design after the break...
