Review: 40628 Miles 'Tails' Prower

The reaction to 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog has been decidedly mixed, while 40628 Miles 'Tails' Prower has attracted a more positive response on the whole.

That seems deserved, as the bushy tails which give Miles his nickname certainly look effective and the construction of this figure is interesting as well, in relation to the ears.

Tails looks brilliant in BrickHeadz form, especially for his ears and facial detail

The Completed Model

Similar to Sonic, I think Tails' proportions translate quite well to BrickHeadz form, particularly given his large head. Moreover, the flame yellowish orange colour looks lovely and I like how white 1x2 plates with teeth are integrated, representing fur on the character's cheeks. The 2x2 curved corner tile on Tails' forehead is successful too, again depicting spiky hair.

Also, the ears look superb and are cleverly constructed, with 1x2 semicircular tiles positioned sideways and forming the white hair inside Miles' ears. Their pointed shape is perfect as well. The eyes on 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog have attracted some criticism and these dark azure tiles follow the same style, although I find Tails' eyes more appealing thanks to the surrounding white pieces.

Of course, the twin tails are this character's most recognisable feature, assembled here using the 2x2 curved cylinder pieces introduced a couple of years ago, with 2x2x2 cones as suitable white tips. Both tails are connected using Technic pins, so they can rotate. Tails is renowned for his mechanical skill, so comes equipped with a pearl silver wrench.

Overall

40628 Miles 'Tails' Prower is undoubtedly my favourite of the two Sonic-themed BrickHeadz released so far. Although I think Sonic the Hedgehog himself looks good on the whole, Miles includes greater detail and his ears seem especially striking, alongside accurate spiky hair on the cheeks.

The bushy tails look nice as well, despite lacking texture. These could have been constructed using smaller pieces to capture some texture, but that would have required considerably more elements and presumably a higher price point. Fortunately, the price of £9.99, $9.99 or €9.99 is consistent with other BrickHeadz models and I think this is a splendid addition to the series.

You might be missing the distinction between "eye" and "pupil". All of that white mess behind Sonic's pupils, that's his sclera. It's one massive eyeball, with two pupils on it.

Okay, thanks! I just assumed the white was fur. I've never played the game or even seen it played, I'm aware that "Sonic the Hedgehog" is a video game series (?) and that's about it!
