Random set of the day: Crystal Crawler
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 1728 Crystal Crawler, released in 1996. It's one of 7 Aquazone sets produced that year. It contains 97 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$10.
It's owned by 2003 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

I love Aquazone, I do, it's easily one of my favourite themes ever ... but was anyone else really hoping we'd get Bad Guy, today?
I have this one from the childhood PLUS the blue sea crystal plastic baseplate. It’s a beauty.

I've got it too! According to Bricklink's catalog, they consider this one to be "the baseplate one". The non-baseplate one is 6145. I rebuilt it a few years back. It's not all that large, but it *is* the biggest Aquanauts set I have.

Like many special-release sets of this era, this was released both with and without the special item; the version without is 6145-1.
Sweet, I had this set as a young lad. Very nostalgic for me.
Cool looking set! It’s been a while since we’ve had two “Random Set of the Day”s in a row in the news feed
I don't know how well it would work in real life, but this actually had some thought put into it, with the multi-directional props, and a set of wheels that would allow it to roll along the sea floor. The only issue I really see with it is I'm not sure how you lift off of the sea floor again. Maybe the props have a reverse setting so they could lift you up while raised above the cockpit instead of needing to be pointed down where they'd be buried in the muck.
This set has amazingly build action feature.

I was hoping for a LEGO + can of tuna combo pack today. Or some other equally strange pairing.
I like how LEGO was hinting at autonomous vehicles all the way back in the Aquazone days, you can tell by the fact that the driver holds a knife in each hand that the sub is driving itself!
I think it's funny how the pilot has both knives drawn while he's still in the cockpit.
One of the best Aquazone sets.
Oh wow, crazy that this one would come up now.. I very recently came across a couple semi-unique legos cleaning out an old box from an old drawer at my parents house. I looked them up and discovered they came from this set, that I had as a child. They are the mostly black, springy ones that hold the front propeller things in position. I was kinda happy to find them and figure out what set they came from.
I love Aquazone. I have only got one set, but I think it's the largest - Neptune Discovery Lab (6195). All those cool pieces, printed raised baseplates, chromed crystals, magnets, functions, the lot.

Lego and denim jeans?
Oh, wait, hang on.
This is a really neat set. It’s got wheels for rolling around, those moveable propeller limbs to swim about, classic grabby arms and the iconic colours and chunky industrial look of Aquazone. All in such a small set too!
Hey! I think I own this one!
