Random set of the day: Shuttle Transcon 2
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6544 Shuttle Transcon 2, released in 1995. It's one of 21 Town sets produced that year. It contains 342 pieces and 3 minifigs, and its retail price was US$38.5.
It's owned by 2192 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

Finally, the 1st good set of RSOTD of 2020.
Still remember the Christmas when I've received this epic set, so many hours playing space exploration and landing the 747 attempt (lol) with the shuttle on top of it.
So simple, yet so realistic to its true model.
Thank you Lego for the good memories!
I love this set! I bought it used a few years ago and I absolutely adore it. It has it all... four wide planes, space shuttles: what’s not to love?!?
All glory to the Spacetown!
I always wanted this set as a kid, but I got into Lego just in time to see it in the catalogs and just too late to get it. After buying it online a couple years ago, I think that it's nearly perfect, but not quite. The cupboard doors for the tool compartments are very loose, so you can't swoosh the carrier aircraft without them flopping everywhere. That's easily remedied by installing the cupboards backwards without the doors for the sake of swooshability, but then you have nowhere to put the tools. But that's the only problem with the set. It's a superb representation in Lego of an iconic part of the Space Shuttle program, and the shuttle and jumbo jet are both solid, satisfying builds that work well with minifigures.
I guess Shuttle Transcon 1 crash-landed on a test flight.
Had this but there was a friend that wanted the plane. So traded it for his black police boat hull and some of those Pirate rope ladder things.

I also remember when I got this set for Christmas. It was amazing especially being so young.
Oh Wow! That’s beautiful!
Long before the Double-Decker Couch we had the Double-Decker Aircraft
Good timing with the ISS announcement!
Hey look they’re transporting the ISS to space!

Transcon 1 presumably is the one included in Shuttle Launch Pad (6399).
Even though I had 6339, I was jealous of anyone who had this set when I was a kid. Great RSOTD!
In spirit of today's reveal!
...Danggit, two of ya already beat me to the punch.
Probably the most epic set I had as a kid. One of the best ever. Rebuilt it many times over the years.
Probably one of my favorite sets from my childhood! Absolute perfection.
I loved the '95 Spaceport line. I think this set was one of the few, that year, that I didn't buy. I loved the helicopter transporter truck more than the shuttle and plane, and yes, I remember the Christmas my parents bought that for me, too.
Never had this set but whenever I see a set from that era...
And just like that, we’re back to REAL Town.
A set I missed going into my dark ages, but fixed that thanks to eBay.
Now that’s sleek but is it a plane or a rocket? Huwbot has broken the terrible random set of the day streak!
I thought that viser was fairly new.
My dad is a plane spotter. When I was a child in the 80s we had a painting of a real 747 with the shuttle on it's back in a frame and on display in the living room.
Yes really.
Georgeous! I was 3 years old back then! :-D
I have this set.
Much rather have this over the new ISS!
I remember seeing this in catalogues. Back then I thought it was a fantastic set. Now it doesn't really draw me in, however I know for a fact my son would love this thing. Those plane and space shuttle design are timeless.
Love this set. Haven't got it unfortunately, but someday...
Nowadays this would cost $100.

I suspect a lot of younger people today are not aware that NASA used modified 747s to move shuttles site-to-site as well as to perform tests of the shuttle’s gliding and landing capabilities. The shuttle would detach from the 747 mid-flight and land separately.
Love the Spaceport theme. When my basement's Lego City has more functioning Space Shuttles than NASA currently does, something is wrong.

Specially with NASA budget.
@iwybs - I agree 100%
I always wanted this set when it came out in 1995, and I recently bought a great one, with box and good stickers, and it’s a GREAT set.
@Zander mostly as a teen all I got from friends who would see the bizarre picture was "ohhhh that's how baby planes are made - snigger".

And for Star Trek fans (yes, there WAS such a thing), said shuttle NASA used for testing was named Enterprise - after the Enterprise from Star Trek mind you, not the other way round. Ironic though that it was the only one of the shuttles that didn't actually go into space.
I think this is the biggest "4-wide" airplane design of Town, before they went to the current larger scales. Great set to have, both play and display.
Still love those airplanes more then the ones using those larger prefab 6-8 wide cockpit/wing parts.
Sure, the new ones are much larger and fit more figures/cargo, but still don't like those larger cockpit parts they use a lot in City and also other themes (like the black marvel helicopter just announced)
The 2017 Creator 3-in-1 Shuttle certainly reminded me of this style, even while it's larger, it's still brick-built and I like it.
(I did not buy the 2019 City Shuttle , again due to it's premade cockpit and the color on that being off)

Or it could be the more widely sold one from 6346-1: Shuttle Launching Crew (1992) , according to brickset that shuttle was also known as Mercury I.
Also that set 6346 was the first one to use those red/blue V shape stripes, unlike the 1990 one using USA flag/text and being sold US-only.
One of the only sets I ever left fully assembled. It was on display in my childhood bedroom from the time I got it until about 6 years ago but it had yellowed so badly.
When I see these older LEGO aircraft that do not use chunky, oversized, and really inappropriate fuseelages, but instead simple parts, I smile. They are very well done.
Remember getting most of the Launch Command sets from 1995 including this and the launch pad set. Had both set assembled until a couple winters ago or so in the basement. This was when LEGO Town was fairly decent in my opinion, before it tanked a couple years later - like a recent RSOD.
I adore this set. Simple but effective. Always wanted it at the time, but missed out. So I was proper chuffed to find this and set 6336 (Launch Response Unit) in a "bunch of bricks" a work colleague gave me when she cleared out here cupboards. Score!
