This was when my little brother was into Lego, and then I finally picked it up for him like 10 years later. It was a fun, creative theme, with the detachable ships and rockets, the minifigs on skiis. I feel like Lego was still trying hard at this point.

And who can forget Icebabe!

A big beautiful spaceship has always been on my want list, but I never ever got one. And these days, it's Star Wars or bust, which is a shame. I think I loved the entire Ice Planet run, though.

This was my favourite set that I had as a kid. I bought this when I was on holiday one year, I think that it took (nearly) all my holiday money, but it was worth it.

For some reason this theme is one of my favorites in the looks department. The colors are bright and bold and I can understand some dislike them. Sort of a “so bad it’s good” type of thing. In person they were the coolest, especially the glow orange chainsaws.

This spaceship is cool! Of course, this environment of the theme is also very cold. When I was a child, this spaceship is crazy for many children. It can be separated into several parts, that improve playability. I am very happy to buy second-hand minifigure from the auction website. It's very memorable.

I guess this color scheme kind of grows on you. I used to think it was ugly, but some neat parts in the ship and the scheme is not that bad. To me, it really looks like an update to 6980

a beloved part of my collection. especially love how modular it all is, how you can recombine the four sections into different styles. lego need to do more spaceships like that

Space Legend

The DFD never struck me as a ship for long space journeys so much as a mobile lab that could be used as a space transport or even improvised for combat.

Being out in the forward cockpit pods with no access to the rest of the ship wouldn't be very enjoyable. Seems like life support would be a challenge in that configuration.

Good stuff. i was always curious about the module in the back and what is actually inside. and of course - one of the first women in space....

A few years back we had Space Police 3. What a great theme that was. We should get more themes from classic space, like Balcktron, M-Tron, Exploriens and such. I like Star Wars but come on...

I loved this space ship. Unfortunately the underside is a bit boring. Still hours of fun :)

I got this thing, complete with no discolouration, for 20 Euros last year off a local eBay knock-off. Love it to death, and I gotta say... they don't make them like they used to.

Somehow through the years of collecting and playing with other kids LEGOs, to this day I managed to obtain a Ice Planet minifigure with the orange visor and everything. I always appreciated that minifigure, because like others here, I couldnt afford or even by the time I could afford, find that set in stores. Such good memories. Happy my younger brother eventually got the Exploriens spaceship. FYI, the colors traditionally work and a lot of artists use the scheme in design because blue and orange are highly complimentary of each other, add white to the mix and makes it look crisp and bold.

I only had one Ice Planet set, and it was one of the smallest. But I didn't mind, as I thought the colour scheme was a little garish. I preferred Futuron, Blacktron and Space Police at the time.
Now otoh I appreciate these sets much more. Have this one on my "to get at some point"-list.

I still have the original pieces and the original instruction booklet for this set. This was one of my all-time favorites growing up and after seeing it again, I think it's time to unpack it and build it.

Picked up a used version with box a few years ago. Worth the 3 hour round trip.

If a similar set of this size was sold today, it would probably be 1,200+ pieces and $130. Not commenting on if that's good or bad, just interesting.

This looks awesome! I love ice planet (I love all space themes, especially the early ones) but this was all way before my time.

I didn't care for Ice Planet at the time. I was strictly Castle and Pirate.

But now, oh, baby! I'd love to get my hands on one of these.

This is one set I randomly picked up at a Target because I thought it looked pretty cool. I also recall it being marked down when I bought it, so that was a plus.

If there's one Lego Space theme that I kinda regret being too young for at the time, it's Ice Planet. I absolutely love its aesthetic... but as I was only two years old at the time? I wouldn't be of age to appreciate such Lego themes for another five years, and I didn't learn about these classics until many years after that.

It seems like a lot of the old themes that everyone else here loves were just a little before my time, heh xD;

Ice planet was such a cool theme. Too bad I wasn't born for another five years or so.

I miss the old magnets Lego used to have. They made play that much more fun as a child. I was 6-7 when this came out, and I only had the 6898: Ice-Sat V, but even that one had the magnets to allow you to move the rocket and release before lift-off. And maybe it's the nostalgia talking, but that color scheme was awesome. The white really brightened the neon orange and it was great!

An all-time favorite! Never could afford it, always aspired to it. Years later I got the Mars Mission 7644 with similar detachable miniships as the closest I will ever come to this set I admired so much for its modularity, many functions, and golden age of yellowverse space-ness.

@ewokswithbricks I love that "the younger generation" (you) has an appreciation for the themes that were here and gone even before they were born.

I only "officially" got one Ice Planet 2002 set, the Ice SAT V, and that was in 1995, well after the theme's heyday. In later years, I got the rest of the main 1993 line-up except for Ice Station Odyssey, with no instructions and the white pieces in various stages of UV yellowing. The Deep Freeze Defender was particularly afflicted, no doubt because the previous owner recognized how awesome it was and kept it prominently displayed in their house. Eventually, I found the instructions for it and built it. Even in its faded splendor, I was very happy with it, and it is SO SWOOSHABLE! I spent lots of time having this ship chase down the rocket that came with it, or in pursuit of some uppity Blacktron II ship. It was also my first experience with a LEGO garage door, so that was a revelation for me. Too bad the back compartment really just houses the one-man rocket tug/scooter. However, since it is removable, you can have it as a "common area", where the off-duty Ice Planeteers relax and try to not act awkward around the only woman in LEGO Space. Haha, grand times.

I would like to refurbish my model with new white parts. However, considering that even some of the blue parts are discolored and the instructions are missing, I am thinking this gem might be worth buying a MISB copy, even if I have to fork out serious dough for it.
