Random set of the day: Shuttle Launch Pad
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6339 Shuttle Launch Pad, released in 1995. It's one of 21 Town sets produced that year. It contains 564 pieces and 4 minifigs, and its retail price was US$66.
It's owned by 2538 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

I always wanted this set as a child.
One of my favourite sets as a kid! The sheer amount of play features was just amazing - the movable launch platform, the launch tower with all the different assembly parts, the little launch control shack on the side... and then the shuttle itself, with the deployable satellite, had a whole other level of features. Just a brilliant design overall that came together wonderfully.
Man I always wanted this. I thought it was so awesome.
I would LOVE to have this set! Always thought it looked great.
Count me among the ranks who would have loved this set! This was probably my favorite LEGO interpretation of the space shuttle... at least until the Shuttle Adventure came out.
Ah, Space Port from '95. Good times. I had three of the smaller Space Port sets, but never this one.
This is the one.
Y’hear that Lego- We looove this one.
This shuttle was just about to retire when I got my first Lego catalogs as a kid, and I wanted it so badly. When the Space Port line came out three years later, I wanted it even more because the replacement was so bad. It wasn't until Shuttle Adventure came out in 2010 that there was another Shuttle with the boosters and tank, and there still hasn't been another launch pad and tower as good as this one: detailed, realistic, perfectly scaled with the Shuttle (from a play point of view), and affordable. Lego has produced a few pretty good Space Shuttles since this kit, with some really cool features, but this one is still the most complete Shuttle playset ever produced.
I saw this at a yard sale last year! The lady was asking a ridiculous price and she was trying to explain to me that LEGO doesnt make it anymore. If the price had been right I definitely would have bought it, such a neat set!
This set is legendary : ) makes me smile just looking at the box art.
This set came out when I was starting a slide into my Dark Ages™, but I was still enough of a kid to NEED this set for Xmas.
Recently, a generous & willing partner and I have cleaned, sorted, and rebuilt all that childhood LEGO to pass on to my nephews...
...but 6339 is ONE set I knew I was going to keep, even above 6399!
This is a set I always wanted from the moment I saw it in the catalogues way back in the early 90's, but never actually got until my 22nd birthday a couple of years ago. That was probably a blessing in disguise, considering my younger self wanted nothing more than to play out some Thunderbirds-esque destruction with it.
Instead, it sits proudly on my shelf as a centrepiece. I hate to be the old grump saying this, but really, they don't make sets like they used to.
I bought this on ebay a few months ago - I've wanted it since I was five. Absolutely did not disappoint, fantastic set. Only flaw is a lot of stickers across multiple parts, but I just cut those with a knife (scandal!)
Well... unlike most of you, I had never seen this set.
Thanks to this "random set of the day" section, I am discovering some brilliant sets.
I still have this set from when I was a kid. Unfortunately all the 1x4 black brackets are broken. :(
Have all the old Launch Command sets. It was a great sub-theme. Loved the Shuttle Transcon 2 with the Shuttle piggybacked on the 747.
This was the set I always wanted as a kid but never got... seems to be a broken record on this thread but I got to admit it still holds its own even now. Looks like ebay it is dammit huwbot
What a coincidence, just unpacked that box from a collection of old boxes left at my folks place. Plenty more to go through and enjoying the trip down memory lane along with the kids seeing sets in their hey day.
I wouldn't be born for another year, and I didn't get my first (actual, not Duplo) Lego sets until 1999 or 2000, and it wasn't until a decade after that I joined here, and became familiar with this set but I think this is one of the most iconic sets in Lego history.
Aw yes, a classic from my childhood! I not only had this set, I had a pillowcase with this set on one side and Neptune Discovery Lab on the other!
In hindsight, it was mega pricy, though the same could be said for the more recent Spaceport from 2015, at least here in the US. I also remember some headaches related to that string. And of course, even back then it felt weird to me that the fuel tank was grey! Otherwise, though, it’s aged rather well for a set from that era, and made advancements that more recent sets have echoed in their own way.
@aanchir, that pillowcase is on eBay now. Curiosity got me and I had to see it lol
Looks like I'm buying a new pillowcase.
i got that for Christmas in 1995.
I had money in 1995 so that was one of the many sets I bought. I still have the shuttle itself put together as part of my shuttle fleet with the later models.
Cool. Had the older version of the Space Shuttle set. I was always a Space fan, but made an obvious exception for a "Town" set when it came to the shuttle.
I bought this set through Bricklink about 8 years ago. It's awesome!
I was just entering my Dark Ages around '95, so I missed out on this when it was new. But 20 odd years later it still satisfies.
