This RSotD has been subject to carcinization.

And yet the sub-theme it is in is 'Stingrays'

Blech. I really hope that's not what I ate in Alaska.

By in Germany,

It's not a cool set, and the figure is ugly, but I wish I had the helmet. It's by far the most interesting part of this set or me.

1998 was probably the peak of retail-only sets like this one (by which I mean they never appeared in the S-at-H catalog, unlike most limited-release sets from prior years). Most of them had editions with and without an exclusive item, like the plastic stingray in 6109. Adventurers had 5948/5909/2879 as well as 5919/3722; Extreme Team had 6589; Insectoids had 6907/6909.

By in Netherlands,

The first Aquazone series were great.
After that the "ugly" Stingrays never interested me.

The only Stingrays set I had as a kid, got a soft spot for the squat little thing; I think its design does a good job of making it look dense and armoured and that it can sort of scuttle around on those stubby little legs is very funny

TRANS-NEON GREEN
CHROME SILVER

Lego will never be as cool as back when they had these colors.

I know most AFOLs have praise only for the Aquanauts and the Aquasharks but, honestly, I simply ADORE the Stingrays and the Hydronauts. In my opinion, 1998 was clearly a step up, especially when you compare the groundbreaking face and torso prints with the innocent-looking, very retro-esque minifigs of the first few subthemes. (Aquaraiders didn't happen, that's a farce.) Beautiful trans neon colors, trailblazing minifigs, stellar printed elements. I'm happy to own almost the entire line of Aquazone.

By in Netherlands,

What a coincidence, I now own one since a few weeks. I find it a cute set. The red bush is fun (just make sure to keep them in good shape), the fig is interesting and the sub itself is unusual. It has a surprising amount of building around the two piece cockpit, which is appreciated. It even uses macaroni bricks for the corners! Add a printed tr.n.green mailbox in the back to hold the crystal (sets of this size in Aquasharks and Aquanauts had no crystal), and movable propellors at the back and we have a unique and fun set.
I find it to look beautiful too, as the tr.n.green does a lot to help its vibrancy.

By the way, I hold next to no nostalgia for the 1998 Aquazone sets as I had no catalogs or pamphlets depicting them when they came out. I only found out about them years later on the internet. This is my first Stingrays set btw. And I still find it neat!

Yeah strange that the majority of their larger vehicles is based on crustaceans...

I really like those trans neon green arm pieces, and of cause Navigator Stinger Ray's teal fish face print!

I'm probably the biggest 90s Lego fan here but the Stingrays and Hydronauts sets were just awful.

Hydronauts had an extremely messy color scheme, but the larger sets had a lot of (actually meaningful) play functions.

And really? Set 6198 is one of the coolest looking Aquazone ships that exists. Also that Dark grey/brown color scheme gave it a unique gritty rusted look.

Also there's no denying that creepy fish mutants are kinda cool.

I was about 14 when this came out and I think I had every aquanauts, aquasharks, and aquaraiders set (the old green ones) before this series. Yet for some reason I never got a single aqua-anything set after those three. Maybe I was just caught up in Lego Star Wars (which I had many of) or maybe it was the beginning of my dark ages. Anyways, I have huge nostalgia for the older aqua-stuff and have even rebuilt most of them over the past few years for my kids to play with.

A Stingray figure was selected for RMotd last September and a few commenters noted that its helmet would make for a great Man in the Iron Mask: https://brickset.com/article/113839/random-minifig-of-the-day-aqu012

Attack its weak point for moderate damage!

Interesting how the foreground blue rock display for the box appears to be a physical model rather than the photoshopped (or black) box art of today, I like it!
