Hi. I'm pretty much locked down now. For anything vaguely fannish, try [livejournal.com profile] fvckofagun. After ten years of solid fannish participation online, I need a bit of a break.

Dear [livejournal.com profile] yuletide Writer,

First off, thank you! You know, in advance. Heh.

I am really easy to please. Gen, het or slash, I'm not that picky (and at least one of my requests can only be het, really). I'm fairly squick-free. I love detail and conversations. There's so much you can put in through a good turn o' phrase. :g:

I hope my babbling in the description section helps but don't feel you have to follow it to the letter and I can't wait to see what you'll write when it arrives. Don't feel that you have to write specifically holiday fic either - I would rather it wasn't, actually.

But either way, enjoy! I am sure I will and I can't wait.

Dear [livejournal.com profile] yuletide,

Ahahaha. I missed you last year, due to thesis madness but here we are again, staring down the barrel of insanity and flailing. Oh well, it's always fun!

Ahahahahahaohgod.

I am spitting teeth at the moment. Here's some numbers that I am particularly unimpressed by.

(As far as I can tell, these numbers exclude NI, who use a different voting system in this case. And I hope, exclude duplicate/dead/errors but that number would still be v. small)

Total number of electorate (i.e. those who can legally vote) in the UK: 44,173,690
Total number of those who bothered to exercise that right: 15,136,932

That means: 29,036,758 members of the electorate did not even bother getting off their arses, going to the polling station (opening hours 7am - 10pm) and making a X in a box.

That's apathy. That's laziness. That's, personally, despicable.

Numbers, btw come from the BBC.

Oh, I am so totally preaching to the choir today but: if you're a UK resident, please vote today. I am sure that I don't need to do my usual dance vis-a-vis the right to vote, both as someone who comes from a country where that right has not always been offered to everyone and as someone whose gender meant that voting wasn't always a right either. ETA: and if you really can't bring yourself to vote for any of the candidates, then spoil your ballot - imo, if you don't engage in the process, then you do yourself and everyone whose ability to vote is restricted (often by the power holders) a great disservice.

I'd say I don't care who you vote for, as long as you vote but we all know that would be a giant, honking lie [1]. But I will say - please bear in mind that the MEPs you vote for will be voting on legislation etc. until 2013[2], so while we are currently cranky with our MPs, giving them a EU vote related bloody nose is not exactly great for the long term.

I have fallen in between electoral rolls/boroughs, so I will be trekking off back to the polling station back in Peckham after work, as there was no way to do that particular journey this morning and still get to work on time.

1. Obviously, should you chose to vote for the BNP/UKIP/ assorted crazies, it is your choice but do me a favour and defriend me because frankly, I don't actually want to know you.

ETA - The Return of. 2. Which, assuming that we do have a general election this year, which frankly, is quite likely, that means that the MEPs chosen today will probably be representing us for longer than the MPs you vote for in the next GE.

ETA #3 (I will shut up soon): And then Boris FELL IN A RIVER. TODAY IS THE BEST DAY EVER. *watches, rewatches, rewatches, rewatches*

I have fucked up in the past. I will no doubt continue to trip up over my privileges and fuck up in the future but I will get up, dust myself down and make an honest effort to learn from my mistakes.

I am not talking because my voice is not the one that needs to be heard but I am reading and trying to aid and support where required or wanted.

(To Edmund Goose)

Return to greet me, colours that were my joy,
Not in the woeful crimson of men slain,
But shining as a garden; come with the streaming
Banners of dawn and sundown after rain.

I want to fill my gaze with blue and silver,
Radiance through living roses, Spires of green
Rising in young-limbed copse and lovely wood
Where the hueless wind passes and cries unseen.

I am not sad; only I long for lustre.
I am tired of the greys and the browns and the leafless ash.
I would have hours that move like a glitter of dancers
Far from the angry guns that boom and flash.

Return, musical, gay with blossom and fleetness,
Days when my sight shall be clear and my heart rejoice;
Come from the sea with breadth of approaching
brightness,
When the blithe wind laughs on the hills with uplifted
voice.

Dear America,

In 1994, I saw the end of the Apartheid and the election of Nelson Mandela and my beloved - for all it's many, many faults - country changed forever. Not every change made was good and all of them took awhile but in the end, it was for the better. Today, I saw the United States of America elect Barack Obama, the first black president of the United States.

America? This is your Mandela Moment.

Congratulations, America. Yes, you can.

Teary love,

Meg

I'm doing a bit of a friends list clean. I'm not very fannish at the moment and I haven't really been for awhile - I think that after ten years of active fannish participation, I need a bit of a break - and just generally need to clean up and sort out various bits of my life. So, it's not you - it's me. Really.

As is always the case - it is always defriending amnesty day here.

eta: my fic remains up. Try [livejournal.com profile] fvckofagun. If I do have anything particularly fannish to say, you'll find it there.
