I noticed that all of the plurality-related Dreamwidth communities that I can find don't really have any active posting, so I made one for actively discussing plural experiences in hopes of helping folks to build some connections: [community profile] pluralquestions

The Houses

Once, there were the People and the Sea. The People lived beside the sea, making their houses from the wood and rock they pulled from their earth, but the Sea made no houses and laid no stones.

The People did not understand this. "Surely," they said, "you will freeze or burn without shelter. The weather is harsh. Where are your homes?"

The Child

Once, there was a Sea that cut through the horizon and traveled on past the sun and moon. Her water was as dark as the inside of one's eyelids, and the only beach She touched was filled with pebbles like seaglass. The pebbles, too, ran on and on, piling up in great rocky hills that broke from the sea. Above, the stars and aurorae danced together in swoops of neon glitter, specks of light reflecting down onto the Sea's waves.

One day, from Her waters came a Child, and that Child wore a skin of stone and seaglass to cover the water flowing in their heart.

I'm finally out of ebook formatting hell and have a workable version of the "assorted plural things written over the last few years" book! I may still go back and reorder one or two chapters, but it's good enough to chuck out there now.

Got recommended an album weird/good enough that I have to toss it at whoever else might like it.

You like rock and metal? Musicals and space operas? Coffee? Go check "Ziltoid the Omniscient" by Devin Townsend. Aliens invade Earth, demand the best cup of coffee humanity can produce in the next five minutes, and declare war over the coffee being shit. There's a guitar battle. It's as goofy as it sounds, but damn do some of the songs go hard. Enjoy.

Pathology

I was making a zine the other day and wrote a phrase that later came up talking to a friend. "I wish people would be willing to engage with me outside of pathology."

People refusing to see differences as anything other than a disease is a problem that I've noticed a lot lately. It was bad enough when I was last around in... somewhere like 2017 or 2018? But now I'm seeing people (especially in online spheres, but increasingly offline too) treat mental illness as a center of identity or absolute truth that everyone can and should be sorted into, as a center to engage with the world through- treating each other as problems to be fixed instead of organic people to learn from, support, and accept. And I really don't like that.

So, a recent project has been making my own writer's deck: a no-distraction device just for writing. You can buy these premade for $300+ and I am not paying that much for this when I can get an old laptop for cheap. So I went with DIYing it on a netbook I got for $20 off eBay. I didn't feel like going the "design and 3D print it yourself" route when there are perfectly good, portable computers able to do the job just as well for my needs.

One Page Ziiiiines

After finally making sense of how to fold them, I've been a little obsessed with making one page zines for the last few days:
Expect more. I'm having fun. :P

I've made even more tweaks to MultiChat, including fixing the load of bugs that showed up in the last release when I had my back turned. Oops. If you spot anything I missed, please tell me so I can fix it posthaste!

Changes in this version:
  • Fixed the bugs introduced in the last release. My bad, they were sneaky ones! Thanks to all the friends who went bug hunting. It's (hopefully) functional now instead of breaking horribly when you look at it wrong.
  • Added settings! Pick your save folder, toggle timestamps, and decide how many lines of old chat you want to scroll when opening an existing file.
  • Added /remove, which allows you to remove users from your list without having to remake the whole thing. Overdue improvement, honestly.
  • Added help text for most commands. <command> help should spit out a load of information for the less intuitive commands now.
  • Chucked the alpha version of graphical MultiChat out there! It's missing features and doesn't look great, but hey, it exists now. I figured it's better to put out a lacking version than no version (and it only gets better from here).

The updated release is here.

A friend (and a netbook) got me working on MultiChat again, and I've made some big improvements.
  • Colors! You can set a color for the prefix of each user. If it works in a terminal, it works here.
  • Lots of streamlining the start-up process. Already saved users? Just hit enter and you're in.
  • An icon! It has an icon now.
  • Squashing major bugs I somehow missed.
  • A little bit of whimsy here and there (in particular, /random now has flavor text, and there's a new easter egg).
  • File save location actually complies with XDG standards now (which means your home directory isn't going to become more cluttered than it already is).
  • Cleaning up the codebase using what I've learned by coding for work.
And the most exciting bit of news... I'm working on a GUI version. It's coming slowly, but it's coming! The structure is there. I just need to squash a few more bugs. I'll update you all when that's working as intended.

If you want
the latest release, it's here.

Edit: After fixing a lot of bugs and adding a few new features, the latest release is now here!

Once, there was a mountain beside the Sea. The mountain rumbled with a belly of fire; long ago, that fire burst from its peak and showered the land in smoke and screaming, but the fire had withdrawn with time and settled back into the mountain's stomach. Even when it began to smoke, the flame would crest the mountaintop before falling back into the stone.

Once, the Sea gave the land a mirror made of fire, brilliant as the sun. The Strangers looked into it and dreamed of what they could be; their potential looked back with knowing eyes and showed them the way forward. They took a flame with them when they left as reminder of what they'd seen.

Finally decided it was worthwhile to buy a rename token and change my journal username (hopefully to something that'll stay reasonably comfortable regardless of brain status). Owlsyspeeps is now beepbird!

Also spent a while mucking with CSS and journal modules. If I removed one that you rely on, let me know and I'll add it back in- I care about people being able to navigate comfortably.
