The Y-Combinator (YC) cookie-licking machine continues to expand. The main choice point for observably impressive founders that want to raise capital is splitting into a choice between a premium multistage fund and YC. What we've learned from watching the recent UNSW YC examples is that high-potential people receive an extraordinary benefit from having a model of behaviour to mimetically copy. YC has the best playbook for creating peer groups experiences that achieves this. At the same time, it's interesting watching the increasing concentration of assets under management (AUM) in a tiny group of multistage venture capital (VC) funds that have premium brands (e.g. a16z, Benchmark, General Catalyst, Insight Partners). These multistage funds focus on content marketing to build a basket of pre/seed-stage call options and the process looks more like a system of lead generation and cookie-licking rather than expert due diligence / thesis creation. Also seeing the multistage firms struggle to accept that they may have missed a cookie. There seems to be less of the big funds picking up the baton from early stage specialist VCs. At UNSW Founders we use philanthropy to help our founders to either look like cookies for Big VC/YC or find sensible alternatives based on their ambition (i.e. bootstrapping).
