SA Water

Water is flowing through 4 spillway gates at Mount Bold Reservoir in the southern Mount Lofty Ranges for the first time in nearly 4 years. This comes after a weekend of record rainfall which delivered significant inflows to the major storage.   Mount Bold has captured more than 13 billion litres of water since the weekend, reaching 95% of capacity, prompting today's controlled release of water that will flow into the Onkaparinga River.   While the 4 gates are open, we’ve closed public access to the dam wall, but visitors can safely watch the pop-up waterfall at the viewing platform within the reservoir reserve off Razorback Road.

A weekend of heavy rainfall has helped put us in prime position ahead of spring, to ensure a reliable supply of water to our customers. Over the 24 hours to 8am today, our reservoirs received approximately 18 billion litres of inflows, increasing combined storage levels by 9% to 73% capacity. This was the highest daily volume of reservoir inflows since September 2016. Our biggest reservoir at Mount Bold received more than 5 billion litres of water alone, lifting levels by 13% to 82% of capacity. Mount Bold acts a storage, transferring water via Clarendon Weir to Happy Valley Reservoir, before it goes to our nearby water treatment plant and to homes and businesses across metropolitan Adelaide.

Learning from the ground up! 🏗️   Introducing Civil Engineering Graduates Deeksha and Ranuthi.   They're among 16 graduates who kickstarted their careers with us in February, eager to make an impact.   Raised in Bhutan (which is an active seismic zone), Deeksha is acutely aware of the importance infrastructure plays in keeping communities connected and safe.   "Knowing that engineers make a lasting difference to people's lives is what inspired me," she reflects.   Working within our Engineering team, and seeing our assets across South Australia up close, has brought a new appreciation for the work SA Water does.   Elsewhere across the organisation, embedded within our Capital Delivery team, Ranuthi is supporting several big initiatives.   "It's exciting to see how these major projects are delivered in practice, with strong collaboration," Ranuthi says.    We're glad to have these new graduates on our team, as their way of working matches our commitment to supporting customers.   "Knowing the skills I've spent years developing can create positive outcomes for people across the state is incredibly rewarding," says Deeksha.   "SA Water stood out because of its scale and the role we play in delivering for communities across South Australia," agreed Ranuthi. From finance, to mining, to water. Desiring a sea change, our Senior Manager of Strategy and Sustainability Jeremiah literally looked at a world map before making the move to South Australia, settling into life on the Fleurieu Peninsula and joining SA Water in a role deeply aligned with his values. While not having worked in the water industry before now, Jeremiah's experiences across Australia, Canada and the Americas has seen him exposed to many unique projects similar to work our teams lead, including seeing firsthand the benefits of ensuring climate resilient water sources are available in some of the most remote locations in the world. “My current role is a combination of so many of the different areas I love working in, and as a dad of 2 young children, the opportunity to help meet South Australia’s water needs now and into the future was too good an opportunity to pass up.” Jeremiah says. From renewing infrastructure to upgrading a treatment plant, our most successful projects have a team connecting the dots behind the scenes.   For us, that's our Project Coordinators, who solve complex challenges every day while ensuring the right people - and the right knowledge - are used from beginning to end.   Big upgrades at our Bolivar, Glenelg and Christies Creek sites are the type of projects the team feels proudest working on – with our network and customers able to experience the positive impact long after our work. For Project Coordinator Midhat, his role working between teams across SA Water reinforces how collaboration impacts the effectiveness of the work we do.   “This role has taught me that communication solves more problems than caffeine - most days!"

Our Pirku-Itya Partnership Program is proud to build bonds through reconciliation projects across South Australia – including in the Eyre Peninsula township of Poonindie. There, the historic Poonindie Mission and Church is establishing a waterwise garden with locally native trees and plants, in consultation with descendants of mission residents and local First Nations people. The garden is just the start of a broader long-term vision that includes cultural interpretation, community and educational opportunities, truth telling, historical tourism and restoration works. Garden committee and Poonindie Anglican Church member Josie Hage said the support through Pirku-Itya and SA Water has helped turn long-held plans into action. “We feel very fortunate to receive this sponsorship. Here’s another sneak peek inside our new water booster pump station at Gawler East! Quite a bit has happened inside the structure since our update last month, with the installation of pumps and associated pipework, electrical systems and a 4-tonne gantry crane – which will safely enable future operational and maintenance activities. The new pump station will complement our recent network upgrades across the area and help boost water supply into Roseworthy, increasing our capacity to service more homes.

Sunrise at Sandy Creek… We’ve made significant progress on 2 new 10-million-litre water storage tanks that will provide a new supply of water for Adelaide’s growing north. Located amongst the rolling hills of the Barossa, each tank is 48 metres wide and 7 metres tall, and will service areas from Craigmore to Roseworthy. Take a look at how the tanks are shaping up, with the first tank’s roof nearing completion before it gets ready for commissioning.

From meter replacements to human pyramids, we were excited to discover the talents of Technical Services Officer Alex.   While his day job sees him working across Adelaide's north with his Customer Technical Services team colleagues, he's also an accomplished cheerleading coach and recently celebrated success at the International Cheer Union's World Championships in Orlando.   Part of the sport for 16 years, Alex led a team of cheerleaders from SA and other states, eventually winning a bronze medal as part of a wider successful appearance for Australian athletes.   You've got to be flexible in cheerleading, and Alex is exactly that, even in a work sense!   After a stint with our Connections team, Alex took a leap into his current role allowing him to solve problems on site.   “I really enjoy being out on the road and seeing how the work I used to do in the office translates in the field,” he explained. We’re excited to see how Alex’s successes continue – both with us, and in the competitive sporting environment he loves.
