ECU City has been named Western Australia’s best architectural project at the 2026 Australian Institute of Architects WA Architecture Awards, receiving the George Temple Poole Award alongside three major category awards.
ECU City was honoured with:
The George Temple Poole Award
The Hillson Beasley Award for Educational Architecture
The RJ Gus Ferguson Award for Urban Design
The Julius Elischer Award for Interior Architecture
The awards were presented jointly to Lyons, Silver Thomas Hanley (Perth) and Haworth Tompkins (London), recognising a collaboration that brought together local, national and international expertise to realise one of Australia’s most ambitious university projects.
We are proud to share these honours with our design partners Silver Thomas Hanley and Haworth Tompkins, whose contribution was integral to the project’s success. It was wonderful to celebrate alongside our Perth colleagues from Silver Thomas Hanley on the night, while acknowledging our UK collaborators Haworth Tompkins, who were unable to attend.
Our huge thanks also go to Edith Cowan University for its vision, leadership and trust throughout the project, and to Multiplex for the commitment, deep expertise and dedication that brought this complex undertaking to life.
ECU City stands on Whadjuk Noongar Country, and from the outset it was important that the project be grounded in a meaningful engagement with place and Country. We are deeply grateful for the contribution of Dr Richard Walley OAM, respected Whadjuk Noongar Elder, artist and cultural leader, whose guidance and creative collaboration helped embed Noongar knowledge, stories and perspectives within the project. His contribution enriched the design immeasurably and helped ensure the project reflects a deeper connection to the land on which it stands.
It was a privilege to accept the George Temple Poole Award alongside ECU Vice-Chancellor Professor Clare Pollock, ECU Vice-President (Corporate Services) Scott Henderson, and the ECU project team, representatives of Multiplex, with the award presented by the Premier of Western Australia, Roger Cook. Scott’s leadership as the accountable executive for ECU City has been instrumental in guiding the project from vision to reality.
ECU City represents a profound investment in the future of Perth and in the transformative role that education, culture and city-making can play in shaping public life. We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to this remarkable project.
