Congratulations to everyone recognised at the 2026 Victorian Architecture Awards. It's always inspiring to see the breadth and quality of work being celebrated across the profession. We’re delighted that Wyndham Law Courts has received a Commendation for Public Architecture at this year’s Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Chapter Awards. Located on Bunurong Country, the Wyndham Law Courts was conceived as a civic building that rethinks the experience of justice. Working closely with the Court Services Victoria team, our ambition was to create a court that is open, welcoming and community-focused—one that places people, rather than institutions, at the centre of the experience. The design draws on Bunurong cultural narratives and the landscapes of Melbourne's west to create calm, light-filled and restorative spaces throughout the building. From its central public atrium to landscaped winter gardens, the project seeks to reduce anxiety, improve wellbeing and provide dignity for all court users. A key part of this vision is the Koorie Court, which provides a culturally safe environment for First Nations communities and includes a direct connection to an adjacent landscaped garden, supporting movement between formal court proceedings and informal gathering. Together with dedicated facilities for the Children's Court, vulnerable witnesses and family violence matters, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can contribute to a more accessible, inclusive and humane justice system. Thank you to Court Services Victoria for their leadership and trust in delivering a project that aspires to set a new benchmark for contemporary judicial environments. Congratulations to everyone involved in the project, and to all of this year's Victorian Architecture Awards recipients and commendation winners. Lyons are delighted to share that the CEW Bean Building & Research Centre at the Australian War Memorial has received a Public Architecture Award at the recent 2026 ACT Architecture Awards.   As a key component of the Australian War Memorial Precinct Redevelopment, the project extends and future-proofs the Memorial’s archival and research capacity, creating a new civic destination dedicated to the stewardship, conservation and accessibility of the National Collection. This project strengthens the Memorial’s mission while enhancing the experience of visitors, historians, veterans and families seeking connection with Australia’s military history.   The award recognises the collective vision, expertise and commitment of an extraordinary project team. We are proud to share this recognition with the Australian War Memorial, our consultant collaborators, and the many specialists whose contribution helped realise this nationally significant project.   Our thanks go to the AWM for its leadership, trust and ambition throughout the project, and to the broader delivery team for their dedication in bringing this complex and important undertaking to life. The CEW Bean Building & Research Centre demonstrates how architecture can support remembrance, research and public engagement simultaneously - creating places that protect the past while enabling future generations to connect with it. It is an honour to see the project recognised by the Australian Institute of Architects ACT Chapter. ECU City has been named Western Australia’s best architectural project at the 2026 Australian Institute of Architects WA Architecture Awards, receiving the George Temple Poole Award alongside three major category awards. ECU City was honoured with: The George Temple Poole Award The Hillson Beasley Award for Educational Architecture The RJ Gus Ferguson Award for Urban Design The Julius Elischer Award for Interior Architecture The awards were presented jointly to Lyons, Silver Thomas Hanley (Perth) and Haworth Tompkins (London), recognising a collaboration that brought together local, national and international expertise to realise one of Australia’s most ambitious university projects. We are proud to share these honours with our design partners Silver Thomas Hanley and Haworth Tompkins, whose contribution was integral to the project’s success. It was wonderful to celebrate alongside our Perth colleagues from Silver Thomas Hanley on the night, while acknowledging our UK collaborators Haworth Tompkins, who were unable to attend. Our huge thanks also go to Edith Cowan University for its vision, leadership and trust throughout the project, and to Multiplex for the commitment, deep expertise and dedication that brought this complex undertaking to life. ECU City stands on Whadjuk Noongar Country, and from the outset it was important that the project be grounded in a meaningful engagement with place and Country. We are deeply grateful for the contribution of Dr Richard Walley OAM, respected Whadjuk Noongar Elder, artist and cultural leader, whose guidance and creative collaboration helped embed Noongar knowledge, stories and perspectives within the project. His contribution enriched the design immeasurably and helped ensure the project reflects a deeper connection to the land on which it stands. It was a privilege to accept the George Temple Poole Award alongside ECU Vice-Chancellor Professor Clare Pollock, ECU Vice-President (Corporate Services) Scott Henderson, and the ECU project team, representatives of Multiplex, with the award presented by the Premier of Western Australia, Roger Cook. Scott’s leadership as the accountable executive for ECU City has been instrumental in guiding the project from vision to reality. ECU City represents a profound investment in the future of Perth and in the transformative role that education, culture and city-making can play in shaping public life. We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to this remarkable project. Edith Cowan University Lyons Haworth Tompkins

In December, we were proud to reach practical completion of the ECU City Campus, a significant milestone for the University, the City of Perth, and our collaborators. Designed as a bold vertical campus, ECU City embodies the University’s vision for a vibrant collision between business, technology, and creativity. The campus puts learning, making and performance on show, opening student life to the city and contributing a distinctive piece of contemporary architecture to the CBD. Bringing together Business and Law, Arts, and Humanities, WAAPA and WASA, the campus is compact and interconnected, driving interdisciplinary collaboration. A network of laneways, atria and stairs creates a porous, city-like campus that is easy to navigate and rich in social interaction. Environmentally responsive facades combine performance with creative expression, transforming into a large-scale media canvas at night. At ground level, an activated foyer facing Yagan Square welcomes the city in; making ECU City a campus that truly reaches out to Perth. The new campus will be welcoming students and staff in February! ECU City Campus is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people. ECU City has reached Practical Completion, paving the way for Perth’s first fully comprehensive, inner city university campus to open in semester one, 2026. Since head contractor Multiplex began early works in 2022, we’ve seen: - Approximately 30,000 cubic metres of low carbon concrete poured. - More than 3,000 tonnes of structural steel installed. - A four-storey dynamic screen fitted in the main foyer. - More than 2,000 custom LED lattice fixtures installed on the distinctive façade. - Formation of eight WAAPA public performance theatres, a Moot Court, Security Operations Centre and state-of-the-art technology, creative arts and business studios, labs and workshops. ECU City is a landmark, $853 million investment by the Australian Government, the Western Australian Government and ECU through the Perth City Deal. With the campus opening in February, students, staff and community will be welcomed into a new era of learning, creativity, innovation and engagement. The new Wyndham Law Courts has been officially opened – delivering safe and accessible justice services for the communities of Melbourne’s west. Lyons were excited to be part of the project, and to help in delivering a benchmark project focused on community centred justice. It also sets a benchmark for the design of a multi-jurisdictional facility, accommodating the needs of the Magistrates Court, Childrens Court and VCAT, including shared spaces. Lyons worked closely with Court Services Victoria, and many other stakeholders, to create an innovative and distinctive court ‘user experience’ (often a highly stressful one) that includes clear and accessible arrival points, a central light filled atrium for orientation, and intuitive wayfinding to all Court Rooms and hearing rooms. The distinctive spatial layout of the building connects all public areas directly to the surrounding landscapes of Bunurong Country in order to maximize calming connections to nature, including secure ‘winter gardens’ adjacent to the courts. Even the courtrooms themselves are designed to be full of natural light and views, with warm and textured natural materials. The civic building form, a catalyst for the future East Werribee Town Centre, responds to its surrounding landscapes, referencing the red cliffs and soil of the Werribee River thereby embedding it into a distinctive sense of place. The overall result is a major new Court that is designed to serve and reflect its community and to create a local identity from which the community can take long term pride.
