We’re proud to share that three Barwon Water projects have been named as finalists in the 2026 Water Minister’s Climate Innovation Challenge, delivered by  Intelligent Water Networks (IWN)👏   Developed with our partners, the projects explore innovative ways to unlock new value from biosolids and support a more circular future:   🌱 Biochar for Dja, in partnership with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and Federation University Australia, will explore using biochar as a growing medium for native tube stock plants at the Wadawurrung Bostock Nursery.   🌾 Future Fertilisers, in partnership with RMIT University will explore nutrient recovery and biochar enrichment solutions to support more sustainable farming.   🪴 WasteNotPot, in partnership with Deakin University, will explore transforming biosolids-derived biochar into biodegradable nursery pots that could replace plastic alternatives.   These projects demonstrate the power of collaboration and innovation to develop circular economy solutions that can deliver environmental, community and industry benefits.   Our Research and Development team will now work with project partners to prepare for the final pitch event on 2 September, with the Challenge winners to be announced on 30 September.   Congratulations to everyone involved. We're proud to mark NAIDOC 2026, with this year's theme being 50 Years of Deadly. For five decades, NAIDOC Week has been more than a week on a calendar. It has been platform, a protest, a celebration and a statement of survival, honouring the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This milestone year celebrates the elders, organisers, artists and communities who have helped build and continue this important movement, while offering a moment to reflect on the strength, leadership and ongoing contribution of First Nations communities. Our staff are marking the week in a range of ways, including staff learning and celebration activities, digital storytelling and representation at local NAIDOC week events across the region. It's Men's Health Week, and this year's theme is 101 Reasons to See Your GP 🩺 Small check-ins can make a big difference. Two in three Australian men wait too long before seeking help when something doesn't feel right, and around half of all deaths in Australian men under 75 are considered potentially avoidable. We're using this week to encourage our people to check in on their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing and on the people around them too. It focuses on raising awareness of the unique health challenges men and boys face and encouraging a proactive, connected approach to health. We sit at the intersection of three powerful systems: water, waste and energy. Through water, we can provide climate-resilient supply that supports agriculture and reduces reliance on potable sources. Through waste, particularly biosolids and organics, we can return valuable nutrients back to soils. And through energy, our treatment processes and assets already generate biogas, renewable energy and heat - with the potential to go further and create surplus. Our General Manager, Smart and Sustainable Infrastructure, David Snadden, highlighted the opportunity for water utilities to connect these systems and to close the loops at this week’s Barwon Bioenergy Forum. Via our innovative work, we’re reimagining the role of a water utility, from a service provider to an enabler of a circular economy. Importantly, this is not something we do alone. Partnerships across agriculture, energy, waste and government are helping to shape what we could collectively achieve. We are inviting interested parties to an industry briefing for the PS28 Risk Managed Delivery Model. The briefing will be held at our Ryrie Street headquarters in Geelong on Friday 29 May at 1 pm. We’re preparing to deliver our infrastructure program for our next five-year pricing submission period, 2028–2033, which will include a significant step-up in infrastructure investment for Barwon Water. We’re presenting on how we plan to deliver this partnership with an engineering service provider and construction contractor partners ahead of launching an Expression of Interest process in June. Our region is one of the fastest growing in Australia and we’re experiencing a long-term decline in rainfall. Over the next five years, we’ll need to innovate and deliver new solutions to meet these challenges.
