ashkitty: a redhead and a couple black kitties (Default)
John Scalzi, Chuck Wendig, and Sunny Moraine on the new Amazon Worlds thing.

tl;dr version: VERY DODGY, STEER CLEAR. You lose the rights to both your writing and your ideas.

I'm an awful reactionary anyway of course, and try to resist all attempts to corporatise fandom, but trust me on this one, it is not a good deal.
ashkitty: (wrath and ruin)
My housemate, on a Facebook post complaining about hipsters hating Margaret Thatcher (I guess as opposed to basically everybody else hating Thatcher, IDK):

J: Where were the hipsters when the West Fold fell? Where were the hipsters when our enemy closed in around us?

(Later, offline)

Me: You are brilliant sometimes.
J: Actually, I know the answer. They were all having coffee in a little place in Tharbad, you've probably never heard of it.
ashkitty: (boo work yay drinking)
1. Ahahaha this is great. I admit to having felt the urge to put up similar signs.

2. I have never actually eaten Chik-a-fil-a and it sounds gross. (A quick look at the website reveals that the reason they're not on my radar is there isn't one within hundreds of miles of anywhere I've actually lived. The closest is Boise, and that was like 7 hours away even in Pullman.)

3. This NYT article about the Olympics is pretty funny:
Asked "What do you feel about the Olympics?" the other day, a random sampling of people here gave answers that included bitter laughter; the words "fiasco," "disaster" and "police state"; and detailed explanations of how they usually get to work, how that is no longer possible and how very unhappy that makes them. (I am going to be in London for a couple of days during the Olympics because [personal profile] the_doctor is, and think it's a daft thing to do. Not to mention bloody expensive.)

4. Boy Scouts have been stupid for a while. I don't actually like clubs that only let in boys or girls anyway (though admittedly the Girl Scouts are pretty badass). For basically all of my school life I was in Camp Fire, which takes everybody and has a pretty full-on nondiscrimination policy, to the point where they're listed as a resource for gay teens in places like Kansas and Missouri. Also you do fun crafts and stuff with other kids, and go to camp and all that.

5. Apropos of nothing, but to make this cheerful again, have a picture of a Dalek cosplaying as the Fourth Doctor. WOULD. YOU. LIKE. A. JELLY. BABY.?

Anyway, I'm off to a conference this weekend--I didn't actually know till yesterday afternoon that I was going, so it's rather short notice, and I want to go for a run first, and get a shower, and you know, pack. So will put the internet away for now.
