DW Akademie in Asia
Asia is undergoing a remarkable transformation, especially in technology and commerce, where many countries have not only caught up with Western industrialized nations, but surpassed them. However, despite impressive advancements, a majority of citizens still struggles with low living standards, lacking essential material goods and access to information. In many Asian countries, freedom of expression is severely restricted.
DW Akademie is committed to addressing these critical issues through three impactful programs:
- Journalism of the Future: This program is dedicated to restoring trust in sustainable quality media. By partnering with local organizations, we enhance training and development facilities, elevate journalistic standards and ensure the economic viability of professional media outlets. Our focus on innovation, media ethics and building trustful interactions with users is crucial for creating a reliable media landscape.(Pakistan, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, Mongolia)
- Digital Resilience and Dialogue: Empowering young people in Asia is at the heart of this program. We aim to enhance media and information literacy, making young people more resilient against disinformation, propaganda and hate speech online. Media and information literacy (MIL) equips them to use media confidently and responsibly, ensuring their voices are heard in public discourse. (Cambodia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan)
- Displacement and Dialogue: Large-scale displacement and migration are serious challenges in Asia. Yet affected people have little access to information about their situation and balanced reporting is scarce. This program therefore strengthens media, media professionals and community reporters, mainly in host countries and in exile, to foster community dialogue, and promote understanding and cooperation. (Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, Afghan media in exile)
The projects of DW Akademie and its partners in Asia strengthen the human right to freedom of expression and free access to information, constructive dialogue and participation. They also support the establishment of a diverse media structure that promotes democratic processes, social development and political stability in the region.
