Review: 75687 Elphaba's Retreat

Posted by ,

Nestled in the forests of Oz is a quaint sanctuary fit for a witch. The setting of the “As Long As You're Mine” song, which describes a blossoming, complex romance, is a mysterious fantastical forest—so it’s no surprise that this set summons up impressions of LEGO Elves.

I’ve enlisted the help of my wife and resident Elves fan, Catherine (CrankyBricks), to explore the LEGO Wicked sets. Over to her after the break…

New Education products announced

Posted by ,

LEGO made an announcement yesterday that is arguably just as significant as the other one that caused much excitement, because of what it spells an end to.

Last year, LEGO released a new set of educational products called LEGO Education Science that included new hubs, motors and other accessories. Now, a trio of similar products that utilise the same technology has been announced: LEGO Education Computer Science and AI which aim to "enable schools to expand critically needed access to computer science and AI education."

Review: 42219 Monster Jam Grave Digger and 42220 Monster Jam Sparkle Smash

Posted by ,

It's that time of the year again to have a look at one of LEGO's annual traditions: a pair of Monster Jam pull-back-and-go Technic trucks. This brings the total to ten trucks since 2021—I am not sure why they skipped 2024?

I usually find these vehicles enjoyable to build, and my children have a lot of fun with them on the kitchen floor. This year we see the return of a previous truck in new livery—42219 Monster Jam Grave Digger—and a newcomer with a very fun-looking design, 42220 Monster Jam Sparkle Smash.

Poll: Which Pokémon do you want to see in LEGO?

Posted by ,

Yesterday, we saw reveals for LEGO sets based on Generation I of Pokémon. The press release suggests this is just the start of a relationship, so there are likely more to come, especially with Pokémon's 30th anniversary in February this year.

For those not familiar with the franchise, there were 151 Pokémon in Generation I (the Kanto region), launched in 1996. Now, there are nine generations of Pokémon, each from their own geographical area. That makes over 1000 different creatures for players to discover, adopt or battle.

It would be a bit overwhelming to write a poll for all the Pokémon that exist now, so let’s start by narrowing it down to the generations—which group would you most like the LEGO Pokémon collaboration to draw from? Let us know by casting your vote after the break.

Review: 75436 The Mandalorian & Grogu's Speeder Bike

Posted by ,

75436 The Mandalorian & Grogu's Speeder Bike is an unusual set, as the vast majority of smaller LEGO Star Wars sets are generally either Mechs or Microfighters. While those can be enjoyable, I am glad to see a standard play set available for a low price.

These characters have appeared plenty of times before, so the set may not be of interest to experienced LEGO Star Wars collectors, but making this duo available in a cheaper set does make sense and I think the speeder looks excellent as well.

Quick Look: 60491 Motorcycle Transporter

Posted by ,

Amongst the new year's smallest City releases, aside from the new Rides subtheme, is 60491 Motorcycle Transporter, 2026's 4+ set designed for little fingers first making the move from Duplo to system. There are seven sets released with this branding so far, but just the one in the City theme.

With its large "starter brick" base, only 88 pieces, and very simple one-piece-at-a-time instructions, it was a breeze to put together for my own children.

Review: 71512 Crocodile Submarine

Posted by ,

Surprising some, LEGO DREAMZzz is still going strong, with the fourth season set to come out at some point this year. There have been five sets released at the beginning of January to coincide with this new season, and as usual they include some impressive-looking animal-based mechs, with a choice of two builds for each.

I'm kicking off the reviews with 71512 Crocodile Submarine, the second largest in the wave, with 1107 pieces. LEGO have also added a "collectable" items to the sets, to presumably encourage people to buy them all, which I'll show later in the review.
